The early essays in this volume proceed on the assumption that a compatibility system can be fashioned that will not only bring religious knowledge claims into harmony with scientific claims but will also show there to be a fundamental similarity of method in religious and scientific thinking. They are not, however, unambiguously successful. Consequently Professor Wiebe sets out in the succeeding essays to seek an understanding of the religion/science relationship that does not assume they must be compatible. That examination, in the final analysis, reveals a fundamental contradiction in the compatibility system building programme which more than suggests that religious belief (knowledge) is beyond legitimation.

Legitimacy is an essential concept in politics. But what is it? This book seeks to answer this question through adopting Weber’s sociological approach to legitimacy. Weber argues that we should not only understand legitimacy from the perspective of the political order, but that we should also look at its subjective meaning. If this approach seems to have fallen into discredit since Weber formulated it almost a century ago, Netelenbos argues that we need to bring back the subjective into political sociology and theory. Political Legitimacy beyond Weber argues that contemporary politics in late-modern society cannot merely be understood in terms of legitimate domination or formal bureaucratic organisation. Politics is also about strategic conflict, coordination and argumentation. Based upon these different conceptualisations of politics and by critically evaluating some of the most leading sociologies, Netelenbos presents four analytical perspectives of political legitimacy. Providing crucial insights into the multiple dimensions of political legitimacy, this will be an essential tool for both empirical and normative research.

In Beyond Dogmatism: Studies in Historical Sociology, Andrea Borghini offers a general overwiew of the perspective of Historical Sociology through distinguished authors working in this field. Each of the contributing chapters traverses the history of sociological thought in a rich and innovative way. Through the analysis of authors such as Bourdieu, Lukàcs, Chase Dunn, Gramsci, Polanyi, Sombart, Mann and topics such as the Critique of Capitalism, the Fetishism of Commodities, the Sociology of Concepts, and various comparisons between Sociology and Political Science, an enlightening panorama is composed. The end result is to restore the extreme topicality and richness of an approach that is particularly valuable for describing and interpreting the dynamics of our age. Contributors are Ricardo A. Dello Buono, Gerardo Pastore, Domenico Maddaloni, Cory Blad, Enrico Campo, Alfonso Maurizio Iacono, Roberta Iannone, Andrea Borghini, Elena Gremigni, Eleonora Piromalli, Lorenzo Sabetta, Carmelo Lombardo and Alfredo Ferrara.

Since the Enlightenment, liberal democratic governments in Europe and North America have been compelled to secure the legitimacy of their authority by constructing rational states whose rationality is based on modern forms of law. The first serious challenge to liberal democratic practices of legal legitimacy comes in Marx's early writings on Rousseau and Hegel. In addition to examining Marx's critique of Kant, Hegel, and liberalism, Schecter investigates the reasons for the authoritarianism and breakdown of state socialist governments in Russia and elsewhere claiming to put Marx's ideas on democracy and equality into practice.

This volume - a product of the Soviet Domestic Politics workshop sponsored by the Social Science Research Council - marks an end and a new beginning. The end, of course, is that of Sovietology, now permanently "overtaken by events". The beginning encompasses not only a radical multiplication of subjects for analysis - the post-Soviet states - but also the arrival of a new generation of scholars entering the field at its turning point. As the essays in this collection demonstrate, they bring fresh contemporary social scientific questions and methods to an unprecedentedly accessible universe of diverse social groups and societies once subsumed under the Soviet rubric. Their work enriches not only post-Soviet studies but the entire range of comparativist work in the social sciences. Among the authors included here are Jane Dawson, Ellen Hamilton, Joel Hellman, Mark Saroyan, Joseph Schull and Michael Smith.

Research is often seen as a neutral, technical process through which researchers simply reveal or discover knowledge. A broader and more self-reflective stance is advocated in Beyond Method, one in which a knowledge of technique needs to be complemented by an appreciation of the nature of research as a distinctively human process, through which researchers make knowledge. Such an appreciation requires a reframing of understanding and debate about research, in a way that goes beyond considerations of method alone.

In Narratives in East Asia and Beyond: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Using Narratives as a Research Method, contributors from diverse fields jointly argue for the interdisciplinary appeal of using narratives as a research method. Scholars from the fields of philosophy of narrative, ethnographic research, linguistics, political sciences, international relations, and area studies reflect on how to approach, understand, and utilize narratives to comprehend social structures and interactions. The volume attempts to reflect on a range of questions, including: How can narrative studies broaden and deepen the scope of research in other fields? What connections exist between narratives and identities (individual and collective)? How does analyzing narratives help us better understand the dynamics of the policy change and the perceptions of self and other? The essays range from reflections on the role of narrativity in cognitive processes, interview settings, and in constructing historical memories to the analysis of narrator and audience perspectives on the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, evaluations of roles and legitimation strategies, as well as interpretations of documentary films. The authors show the flexibility and fruitfulness of incorporating narratives into research agendas in a wide range of disciplines and highlight the theoretical and empirical research benefits that narrative studies open up.
