This open access book promotes the idea that all media types are multimodal and that comparing media types, through an intermedial lens, necessarily involves analysing these multimodal traits. The collection includes a series of interconnected articles that illustrate and clarify how the concepts developed in Elleström’s influential article The Modalities of Media: A Model for Understanding Intermedial Relations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) can be used for methodical investigation and interpretation of media traits and media interrelations. The authors work with a wide range of old and new media types that are traditionally investigated through limited, media-specific concepts. The publication is a significant contribution to interdisciplinary research, advancing the frontiers of conceptual as well as practical understanding of media interrelations. This is the second of two volumes. It contains a concluding article by Elleström and seven contributions concentrated on the issue of media transformations: how media characteristics are transferred and transfigured among various media products and media types.

This collection brings together leading scholars across disciplines to reflect on the relationship between intermediality and multimodality and future directions for the contemporary mediascape, building on a 2022 Linnaeus University lecture series honouring the legacy of Lars Elleström, following his untimely death in December 2021. The volume contributes to ongoing dialogues about media and society, the challenges and opportunities for academia to engage with developments in the evolving mediascape, and interdisciplinary pathways towards engaging with these questions. Each chapter features an established figure in such fields as multimodality, intermediality, semiotics, narratology, art history, and adaptation studies. Each essay is prefaced with an introduction by the editors and bookended with a discussion transcribed from the original live presentations. A concluding chapter looks ahead to future directions, opening new lines of inquiry around the possibilities for intermediality and multimodality research towards continuing to build on Elleström’s seminal work in the field. This book will be of interest to scholars in multimodality, intermediality, and media and communication studies. Modelling the City focuses on European towns and cities, analysing the opportunities and limitations of modelling of urban space. This book examines how urban space from the past is discovered, explained and presented. It discusses the multitude of historical sources mediating the past urban space, and the structural, technical, and epistemological issues raised around building a domain ontology, including continuity, and change within urban forms and functions. Presentation of a formal domain ontology in spatial humanities makes this book unique and worth reading. It is strongly recommended to readers interested in the linked open data approach to research, data standards in Digital Humanities, urban planning, and old maps.

The age of digital culture has not only brought significant transformations in how we perceive memory, history, and heritage, but it has also raised pressing questions about authenticity and ownership of memory. The role of digital technologies in shaping collective identities is a topic of intense scrutiny. Moreover, contemporary societies grapple with complex issues in the politics of memory, especially with the proliferation of diverse narratives and the manipulation of public spaces. The book's content is therefore highly relevant, offering critical reflection and scholarly analysis to these societal challenges. Performativity and the Representation of Memory: Resignification, Appropriation, and Embodiment offers a comprehensive exploration of these issues, examining how contemporary practices of re-enactment intersect with digital contexts to shape our understanding of memory and heritage. The book analyzes the processes of memory creation and transmission in digital environments, providing a nuanced understanding of how memory is constructed, shared, and contested in the digital age. It also explores the role of arts-based research and participatory practices in documenting and preserving collective memories, offering insights into new forms of memory sharing and identity formation.

Modelling The Energy Transition written by Robert Matthias Erdbeer and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-05 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This open access book reconfigures Energy Transition as a global discourse from a multidisciplinary perspective. Energy Transition is not only one of the most daring technological endeavours of the present, it is also its new master narrative. Focusing on modelling both as a cultural technique and as a strategy of innovation, the chapters provided in this volume throw into relief the visions, but also the blind spots of modelling the challenges of climate change. Thus, in a rare encounter, major voices from the Sciences and the Humanities, from Energy Systems Design, Mechanical Engineering, Theory of Science, Science and Technology Studies, Literary Studies and the Arts, have gathered here to overcome the cultural divide between the technological and the societal dimensions of this global task. In doing so, they offer a new form of model criticism, pointing to the impacts of what may be termed the ‘Energy Imaginary’ on the technosocial mindsets of our time.

This handbook provides an extensive overview of traditional and emerging research areas within the field of intermediality studies, understood broadly as the study of interrelations among all forms of communicative media types, including transmedial phenomena. Section I offers accounts of the development of the field of intermediality - its histories, theories and methods. Section II and III then explore intermedial facets of communication from ancient times until the 21st century, with discussion on a wide range of cultural and geographical settings, media types, and topics, by contributors from a diverse set of disciplines. It concludes in Section IV with an emphasis on urgent societal issues that an intermedial perspective might help understand.
