The establishment of the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) in the late 1980s allowed hobbyists and musicians to experiment with sound control in ways that previously had been possible only in research studios. MIDI is now the most prevalent representation of music, but what it represents is based on hardware control protocols for sound synthesis. Programs that support sound input for graphics output necessarily span a gamut of representational categories. What is most likely to be lost is any sense of the musical work. Thus, for those involved in pedagogy, analysis, simulation, notation, and music theory, the nature of the representation matters a great deal. An understanding of the data requirements of different applications is fundamental to the creation of interchange codes. The contributors to Beyond MIDI present a broad range of schemes, illustrating a wide variety of approaches to music representation. Generally, each chapter describes the history and intended purposes of the code, a description of the representation of the primary attributes of music (pitch, duration, articulation, ornamentation, dynamics, and timbre), a description of the file organization, some mention of existing data in the format, resources for further information, and at least one encoded example. The book also shows how intended applications influence the kinds of musical information that are encoded. Contributors David Bainbridge, Ulf Berggren, Roger D. Lewis Terman heralded the field of gifted education in the United States by tracing the development of high-IQ children from their childhood in the1920s to midlife and beyond. The contemporary field of gifted education, building on the work of Terman and others, presumes that gifted children become exceptional adults. Longitudinal research offers the opportunity for critical examination of the way gifted children and adolescents are identified and illuminates the characteristics and experiences that affect sustained achievement. Only long-term studies can directly address whether or not gifted education is finding the right people and doing the right things. The studies demonstrate the fit between longitudinal methodology and the central issues of gifted education. Collectively, they investigate the early determinants of later academic and career achievement and creativity while employing varied identification practices, perspectives, theoretical orientations, and populations.

The popularity of the Management Forum in "Software Development" Magazine is not surprising. Because the majority of software development projects fail to come in on time, on budget, or on specification, software development managers are constantly seeking out management approaches and techniques that will help them achieve success. Many software development projects deteriorate into a state of chaos. In "Beyond Chaos, " the keenest contributions to the Management Forum have been incorporated into a single volume to reveal best practices in managing software projects and organizations. The forty-five essays contained in this book are written by many of the leading names in software development, software engineering, and technical management. Each piece has been selected and edited to provide highly focused ideas and suggestions that can be translated into immediate practice. Pragmatic and provocative, they address key management concerns involving people, planning and productivity, coping under pressure, quality, development processes, and leadership and teamwork. Highlights of the book include: Larry Constantine, "Dealing with Difficult People: Changing the Changeable" Karl Wiegers, "First Things First: A Project Manager's Primer" Capers Jones, "Productivity by the Numbers: What Can Speed Up or Slow Down Software Development" Ed Yourdon, "Death March: Surviving a Hopeless Project" Dave Thomas, "Web-Time Development: High-Speed Software Engineering" Meilir Page-Jones, "Seduced by Reuse: Realizing Reusable Components" Jim Highsmith, "Order for Free: An Organic Model for Adaptation" Steve McConnell, "Managing Outsourced Projects: Project Management Inside-Out" These and many more insightful and advisory essays together represent the cutting edge in software development management and the collective wisdom of the field's most knowledgeable practitioners. Both entertaining and enlightening, "Beyond Chaos" will enrich your skills and enhance your deeper understanding of the process of bringing software from idea to reality. 0201719606B06262001

"This book focuses on the tours made by dancers from the Maryinsky Theatre from St. Petersburg to Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Berlin in the early summers of 1908-1910. The star of the group was Anna Pavlova, for whom theses performances were a stepping-stone to an international career. The tours were organized by a Finnish impresario, Edvard Fazer, who at the time was running his own concert agency in Helsinki."--Page 4 of cover.
