Beyond Oligarchy is a collection of essays by leading scholars of contemporary Indonesian politics and society, each addressing effects of material inequality on political power and contestation in democratic Indonesia. The contributors assess how critical concepts in the study of politics—oligarchy, inequality, power, democracy, and others—can be used to characterize the Indonesian case, and in turn, how the Indonesian experience informs conceptual and analytical debates in political science and related disciplines. In bringing together experts from around the world to engage with these themes, Beyond Oligarchy reclaims a tradition of focused intellectual debate across scholarly communities in Indonesian studies. The collapse of Indonesia's New Order has proven a critical juncture in Indonesian political studies, launching new analyses about the drivers of regime change and the character of Indonesian democracy. This book explores the continuity of oligarchic rule in the Americas of the modern period, with a focus on the variable compatibility of oligarchic rule and democratic government. This focus sets the terms for a comparative inquiry that creates a novel perspective on the politics of Latin America and the United States alike. The continuity depends on the formation of a patrimonial State and a porous division between oligarchic interests and the public sphere of democratic politics; but it also depends on a capacity to adapt and change, and these changes are marked by successive and distinctive modes of rule in both Latin America and the United States. The book concludes with a description and comparison of the sequences and political characteristics of these modes of rule and discovers a recent and remarkable convergence of oligarchic rule in the Americas.

Activists in Transition examines the relationship between social movements and democratization in Indonesia. Collectively, progressive social movements have played a critical role over in ensuring that different groups of citizens can engage directly in—and benefit from—the political process in a way that was not possible under authoritarianism. However, their individual roles have been different, with some playing a decisive role in the destabilization of the regime and others serving as bell-weathers of the advancement, or otherwise, of Indonesia's democracy in the decades since. Equally important, democratization has affected social movements differently depending on the form taken by each movement during the New Order period. The book assesses the contribution that nine progressive social movements have made to the democratization of Indonesia since the late 1980s, and how, in turn, each of those movements has been influenced by democratization.

For centuries, oligarchs were viewed as empowered by wealth, an idea muddled by elite theory early in the twentieth century. The common thread for oligarchs across history is that wealth defines them, empowers them and inherently exposes them to threats. The existential motive of all oligarchs is wealth defense. How they respond varies with the threats they confront, including how directly involved they are in supplying the coercion underlying all property claims and whether they act separately or collectively. These variations yield four types of oligarchy: warring, ruling, sultanistic and civil. Moreover, the rule of law problem in many societies is a matter of taming oligarchs. Cases studied in this book include the United States, ancient Athens and Rome, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, medieval Venice and Siena, mafia commissions in the United States and Italy, feuding Appalachian families and early chiefs cum oligarchs dating from 2300 BCE.

The city-state has a higher level of inequality than any country in the West, mainland China and Japan. The top 1% takes the wealth, while those in the bottom 99% do little more than survive. It is a dictatorship, a police state and an oligarchy. This is the story of the dark side of Singapore.Eighty-five percent of Singaporeans live in government housing, housing that they are forced to buy using compulsory contributions to a retirement fund. The mean family income is US$4,936 per month, an income which usually must provide for three generations, however, the very few large earners take millions of dollars each year. Singapore is one of the most expensive cities on the globe. The prime minister, an individual who was enterprising enough to inherit his job from his father earns S$2.2 million as prime minister and another S$2 million from other appointed posts, more than 6 to 8 times the income of the US President and the political leaders of the European Union, Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Yet, Singapore is a country with only five million inhabitants. It is a city, a small city. The European leaders and the US President have real jobs. The Singaporean PM does not.Singapore is ruled, like Vietnam, China, Cuba and North Korea by a single political party, the People's Action Party. The salaries of its politicians and senior officers are tied to the salaries of Singapore's business elite. The judiciary is appointed by politicians, as are the senior officers of a number of its institutions, including its central bank, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, its investment organizations, Temasek and the GIC, sovereign wealth funds, and a number of news, communications and land owning institutions. Control is the order of the day. Singapore is a political oligarchy, which claims to be precisely what it is not, a meritocracy. The only beneficiaries are the Lee clan and its lackeys, the People's Action Party, the only party to have governed Singapore, and the business community that keeps them in power. Singapore controls the press, restricts freedom of speech, ignores human rights, and promulgates its own version of its history, a story that eschews reality.

As corporate practices are becoming more fused with state processes, the state itself is increasingly taking on a corporate structure, as well as a more overt oligarchic character. Evidence of this can be seen in the growing domination of political organizations and institutions by close-knit social groups (familial dynasties, closed associations, or personal networks) that seek exclusive control over economic resources. These new forms of state power that are emerging are not reducible to the past, and the nation-state, as the essays in this volume show, is giving way to a political-economic formation that has multiple state-like effects and is able to act in ways systemic with deterritorializing global processes. Exploring these processes in different concrete locations from North America to Russia, West Africa, and Australia, the authors show that current configurations of global, imperial, and state power cannot be understood without examining their relation to formations of oligarchic control. They bring us closer to an understanding of the ways in which the nation-state is being transformed by globalization.
