We seem to be stuck, staring at insurmountable challenges. The pandemic is the opening act for climate change, and we need to get much better at anticipating and preparing for these types of challenge. Simply rebuilding bridges once they fall, or houses once they are swept away, is both expensive and risks human lives. Anticipation and preparation costs more now, but is much less costly over time. Of course, spending now to save later is not a dominant American tradition. We have managed - or at least reacted to - the Aids epidemic (1981-2013), Internet bubble bursting (2001), the real estate bubble bursting (2007), the opioid epidemic (2017), forest fires on the West Coast (2018), and the coronavirus pandemic (2020). Very recently, we have experienced the fall of Afghanistan (2021), the latest earthquake and hurricane in Haiti (2021), and the attack on Ukraine (2022). Various earthquakes, hurricanes, and recently cicadas, but fortunately not locusts, have been sprinkled throughout. Beyond Quick Fixes steps back from business as usual to rethink how we can approach the complex challenges of contemporary society -- health, education, energy, and social media. Rouse retreats, initially, into the principals of design thinking rather than policy making; he rigorously reconsiders our typical modes of operation and explores alternative ways of thinking about complex problems and potential solutions. The result is an integrated approach to addressing complexity to assist leaders and advisors responsible for addressing these challenges.

MOVING THE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT MESSAGE: TURNING A VAGUE IDEA INTO A MORAL IMPERATIVE Peter L. Benson and Karen Pittman THE CONTAGION OF AN IDEA In the past fifteen years, countless programs, agencies, funding initiatives, profes sionals, and volunteers have embraced the term "youth development. " Linked more by shared passion than by formal membership or credentials, these people and places have contributed to a wave of energy and activity not unlike that of a social movement, with a multitude of people "on the ground" connecting to a set of ideas that give sustenance, support, and value to increasingly innovative efforts to build competent, successful, and healthy youth. There are several particularly interesting dimensions to this movement. First, the youth development idea has the potential to draw people and organizations to gether across many sectors. Conferences and initiatives using youth development language attract increasingly eclectic audiences, bringing together national youth organizations, schools, city, county, and state agencies, police and juvenile jus tice workers, clergy, and committed citizens. Perhaps embedded in the youth de velopment idea is a philosophy or a "way" that has created an intellectual and/or spiritual home for actors across many settings. However this happens, it is clear that one of the powerful social consequences of the youth development idea is a connecting of the dots-the weaving within and across city, county, state, and of a tapestry of new relationships.

What does it mean to live a life of beauty and liberation? In an era marked by divisive debates over curriculum, justice, and inclusion in education, this book calls us to return to a fundamental question: our shared humanity. This book is an integrative work weaving together the lived experiences of educators, critical pedagogy, aesthetic theories, sublimity, creativity, and feminist philosophies of social justice and antiracism. It advances our understanding of oppression by applying aesthetic frameworks to analyze, discuss, and dismantle dehumanizing systems. Aimed at educators, higher education faculty, and interdisciplinary scholars, this book bridges theory and practice. It provides actionable strategies for creating classrooms that encourage critical thinking, creative expression, and sustained engagement with liberatory principles. Examining how beauty and sublimity influence our understanding of justice and oppression, this book offers a fresh perspective on fostering transformative learning environments. Beauty has much to teach us about liberation. This text invites readers to explore the complexities of oppression while uncovering how education can leverage beauty and aesthetics to cultivate resilience, courage, and solidarity. For those committed to aligning educational practices with justice and human flourishing, this book offers both inspiration and a roadmap for change.

Organisational Development in Practice: A Complexity Approach draws on conventional, critical, and complexity thinking in relation to organisational development with a view to exploring what’s useful and what’s not. This book proffers an approach to organisational development that helps to develop, support, and maintain more democratic, collaborative, inclusive and sustainable ways of learning, working, and living. The author explores the practicalities of working with the frustrations and inconsistencies involved in coping with the patterns of human interaction that inevitably make up organisations, where planned and emergent approaches co-exist, whether we would like them to or not. Woven in between the personal essays are vignettes from a range of international practitioners reflecting on their own experiences in the field. This book, a radically different approach to organisational development, is suitable for advanced students and researchers of organisation and organisational development, organisation studies, human resource management, and executive education. It will also be of interest to practising managers.

From a cognitive psychologist, a trusted voice among millennial women, a call to action for readers everywhere to enter their true self-care era that will nourish and sustain them. Toxic self-care culture tells women that bubble baths and Botox are the route to happiness and fulfillment. Though these types of self-care can fill us up in the moment, they cannot provide long-lasting nourishment. They are empty calories—the potato chips of self-care. And from them, we can never get full. In the same way, we will not feel fulfilled by reaching for the empty calorie “self-care” trends that toxic, materialstic self-care culture sells us. To fill our exhausted bodies and weary minds, to live fully and authentically, we need the kind of self-care that nourishes. Beyond Self-Care Potato Chips is a call to action for women everywhere to reach instead for nourishing self-care. Though this may sound easy in theory, many women struggle to carry it out. We struggle because we have forgotten how to reach. Our training as little girls taught us that it is polite to be grateful for what we get. To say thank you but I'm full when offered second helpings. To accept the potato chips we are given because there are people on this planet who have none, so how dare we ask for more? Through the narrative voice of a psychologist who is also an exhausted millennial mom trying to keep it all together, Beyond Self-Care Potato Chips explores courageous self-care in the areas of marriage, motherhood, family dynamics, friendships, career life, and mental health. The author's personal stories range from the hilariously-yet-painfully relatable to the resonantly heart-rending. Each of these stories—the beautiful, the sparkling, the sad and the chaotic—teach women something about what it means to reach. What it means to stop settling for potato chips and to instead grasp for the things that truly fulfill. Beyond Self-Care Potato Chips is a mindset—a way of embracing and stepping into all of our divine, feminine power.

Beyond Bias written by Andrea S. Kramer and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-28 with Business & Economics categories.

Despite extensive and costly diversity initiatives, little progress has been made in recent years in ending workplace gender inequality. Beyond Bias presents a compelling explanation of the reasons for this failure. Current diversity initiatives focus primarily on "teaching" people to be less biased and more inclusive. But this is the wrong focus. As Beyond Bias make clear, workplace gender inequality is a systemic problem caused largely by the (unintended) discriminatory operation of personnel systems, policies, and practices. Beyond Bias presents the four-prong PATH program for directly attacking this structural discrimination-and with it, individuals' discriminatory conduct: · Prioritize Elimination of Exclusionary Behavior · Adopt Bias-free Methods of Decision-Making · Treat Inequality in the Home as a Workplace Problem · Halt Unequal Performance Evaluations and Leadership Development Opportunities In the authors' characteristically clear and engaging style, Beyond Bias lays out a comprehensive set of actions that organizations can take to ensure women no longer encounter gendered obstacles to their career advancement and find their workplaces engaging, supportive places where they-and everyone-can thrive.
