Recently a growing number of Christians have actively promoted the concept of "restorative justice" and attempted to develop programs for dealing with crime based on restorative principles. But is this approach truly consistent with the teaching of Scripture? To date, very little has been done to test this claim. Beyond Retribution fills a gap by plumbing the New Testament on the topics of crime, justice, and punishment. Christopher Marshall first explores the problems involved in applying ethical teachings from the New Testament to mainstream society. He then surveys the extent to which the New Testament addresses criminal justice issues, looking in particular at the concept of the justice of God in the teachings of Paul and Jesus. He also examines the topic of punishment, reviewing the debate in social thinking over the ethics and purpose of punishment -- including capital punishment -- and he advocates a new concept of "restorative punishment." The result of this engaging work is a biblically based challenge to imitate the way of Christ in dealing with both victims and offenders. - Publisher

In recent decades, scholars have tended to interpret what Job says about death in one of two ways. They interpret it either as part of the broader reading of death in the Old Testament, or by imposing Ancient Near Eastern mythological concepts upon the text disregarding its nature as part of the Old Testament’s wisdom tradition. Varunaj Churnai attempts to redress the latter interpretation and treats the book of Job, and its development and understanding of death, contextually. Churnai specifically looks at how Job presents the two faces of God: God’s wrathful face and God’s gracious face. Beyond Justice demonstrates that the retribution principle allows humans to know the hidden God as it illuminates the relationship between individual and Creator. Through Job’s experiences and heartfelt outpouring of his soul before both God’s wrathful face and God’s gracious face we can know God more fully. Churnai shows how these faces of God are reconciled in the two divine speeches of YHWH, which invite both Job and the reader to move beyond retribution theology to trust in the graciousness of God.

This monograph argues that internationally, restorative justice has been carefully considered and a high degree of consensus about the approach exists. South Africa is now well positioned -- in terms of the policy environment, existing practice as well as practitioners' perceptions -- for using restorative justice methods in the day-to-day handling of criminal offences. In doing so, the main challenge will be providing effective training on the aims, outcomes and applications of the process.

Today’s wars leave a crippling legacy of deprivation and suffering, of physical and structural injustice, long after they submit to peaceful resolution. Survivors of war must find ways to live with the stultifying injustices littering their past and haunting their present – acts of discrimination and violence committed before, during and even after conflict. Confronting the vexed challenge of re-marrying peace with justice out of the morass of war’s injustices is the complex but imperative task facing post-conflict societies and the international community today. Using current examples from conflicts around the world, ranging from Africa and Asia to Latin America and Eastern Europe, it argues for a holistic and integrated approach to justice after conflict. It proposes that we must address all three dimensions of injustice embedded in conflict – symptom, consequence and cause, and that subsequently we must rebuild all three dimensions of justice – legal, rectificatory and distributive, in the aftermath. This timely book explores the difficulties and dilemmas confronted on the ground in restoring these, and concludes with pragmatic recommendations for dealing with such challenges of rebuilding peace with justice after contemporary conflicts. This well-argued book will prove a valuable resource for students and professionals in the fields of peacebuilding, justice theory, international relations and politics.

A dramatic story of a talented young designer who was forced to flee her home to protect her family and friends from criminal elements, who killed her husband and were intending to do the same to her. She hid in the town’s central park and had to beg for money on the steps of the Town Hall to survive. She was continually confronted by a wealthy businessman who had involvement with the underworld and who had no time for beggars. He considered them trash and should be removed from the city streets. He often abused and physically attacked her as she sat begging on the steps of the Town Hall. She was helped back into the fashion industry by a businessman who got to know her story and who acquired a recognised fashion house which had previously gone into liquidation. Tragedy struck when the designer died before a major exhibition which the underworld intended to win. The principal running the fashion house for the underworld lost a number of fashion shows and a substantial amount of money during the GFC and to prevent being killed, took up occupancy in central park and was forced to beg on the streets to survive in the same way as did the girl whom he took exception to. The mystery intensifies as divine retribution is inflicted on the perpetrator. Throughout the novel, a number of controversial religious doctrines are raised and are intermingled with the storyline.
