Beyond the Lectionary gives preachers a new year of Biblical texts that are not found on Sundays (or other mainline Protestant holy days) in the three-year cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary. It provides readings from the Hebrew Bible, Psalms, Epistles/New Testament and Gospels for each Sunday of the liturgical year, along with several midweek observances. The texts have been selected with an eye toward continuity (progressing in order) and complementarity (textual completion or harmony), and they are accompanied by commentaries and prayers. Written in language that is accessible to both lay people and professionals, Beyond the Lectionary has the potential to transform congregational culture by bringing more of the content of scripture to people's awareness. ,

In each of Sunday's assigned lectionary readings -- the First, Second, and Gospel lessons -- we are invited to view the glorious narrative of scripture through three different, yet harmonious, perspectives. In the gospel lesson, we return to the fountainhead, bringing the congregation back to where Christianity began. Like the first disciples, we walk with Jesus, hearing his words and witnessing his miracles as we journey to the Cross. As part of the Sermons on the Gospel Readings, Series III, Cycle A series, "To the Cross and Beyond" takes us through Jesus' final days on earth as recounted in the Sundays of Lent and Easter. David O. Bales explores some of the gospel's best-known moments as Jesus journeys to Jerusalem and, ultimately, to the Cross and then the empty tomb. This collection of sermons is a valuable resource for: + Sermon starters and illuminating illustrations + Gaining a new homiletical perspective to the lectionary + Offering a newer, deeper understanding and appreciation of scripture + Using as a starter for adult Bible study groups or personal devotions This insightful collection of sermons includes: Looking Down on God Putting the World Back Together Jesus' Prayer: The Pause in the Battle ... and many more! David O. Bales was a Presbyterian minister for 33 years. Since retiring he has devoted his time to writing and to teaching, currently teaching Hellenistic Greek at College of Idaho, Caldwell. Previously he taught World Religions, Hebrew and Ethics. He has researched, written, and edited for Stephen Ministries. His stories, sermons, and articles have appeared in "Preaching," "Pulpit Digest," "Lectionary Homiletics," "Preaching Great Texts," "Emphasis" and "StoryShare." He is the author of "Gospel Subplots: Story Sermons of God's Grace," "Toward Easter and Beyond" and "Scenes of Glory: Subplots of God's Long Story." Bales is a graduate of the University of Portland and San Francisco Theological Seminary.

This commentary, which uses the lectionary approved by the NCCB in 1998, is a literary-liturgical reading of the four lections, including the psalm response, of each Sunday and major feast of the liturgical year cycle C. It explicitly situates the interpretation of each day within the theology of its respective liturgical season, theology that is drawn from the specific themes of the readings of that particular year rather than from general theological themes otherwise associated with the season. The lections are also read in sequential order, from the first Sunday of that season to the last, thus providing another way of interpreting the riches of the readings. Book jacket.

The Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) is best understood and used as a flexible framework of Biblical readings for worship through the three year Church Year cycle, within which the preacher and worshiping community are free to alter or choose different texts to educate and empower the congregation to more effectively fulfill the mission of the church. The RCL is a helpful framework of texts for worship, a common starting point for worship planning which regularly takes the congregation through the Gospels and other key Scripture passages. If we did not have the lectionary, someone would have to invent something like it. We can accept the framework of the RCL as an ecumenical gift and build upon it, however, without being tied to each and every reading. The lectionary needs to be incarnated in the congregation in the light of local contexts and needs. This book and the website www.opensourcelectionary.com are the fruit of my 2011 Doctor of Ministry in Biblical Preaching project, developing and sharing open source, online resources to help preachers adapt the lectionary to their congregation's context and more fully communicate the story of the Bible and preach the congregation into God's story and mission. My goal is to show why and how to depart from the RCL faithfully and creatively for the sake of the mission of the church. Let us claim our freedom to improvise and innovate with open source Lectionary Mods!"For the preacher looking for ways toward sermons 'outside the box' this book is a must. In the midst of a fair and balanced critique of the Revised Common Lectionary, Lemonholm's proposal affords creative lectionary options that can supplement and enhance lectionary preaching. Lemonholm is careful to situate his project not as a rival lectionary but as possible directions for preaching that address and give voice to the multiple liturgical, theological, functional, and pastoral concerns for congregations centered in biblical preaching." - Karoline M. Lewis, Assistant Professor of Preaching at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota

Abingdon Theological Companion To The Lectionary written by Paul Scott Wilson and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-01 with Religion categories.

The point of the Revised Common Lectionary is to allow God’s people to encounter the meaning of Scripture through the Word read and proclaimed. Yet too many lectionary resources fail to help in that task. In fact, they often confront the preacher with a choice between poor options: in-depth commentary focused too heavily on the historical world of the text; or shallow suggestions for “life applications” that have too little to do with the real world. Christians are called to an engagement with the deep meaning of Scripture; preachers are called to help them do that. But where can they turn for resources that will make this possible? The Abingdon Theological Companion to the Lectionary begins with the conviction that Scripture speaks first and foremost to Christians now. Its message engages Christian belief and action in the present day. While informed by the best in current biblical studies, its commentary on the Scripture passages of the Revised Common Lectionary focuses on the questions of Christian life in the world that church members bring with them to worship. Each entry is co-written by a Theologian and a Homiletician and seeks to answer the essential questions, “what does this passage say about the Gospel? How does it speak to my encounter with God in Christ, and my calling as a Christian in the world?” This volume is conceived as a companion to biblical and lectionary resources that preachers regularly employ. It showcases theological matters that arise out of both the biblical texts in the lectionary and the church seasons and special days. This important resource will draw upon recent scholarship in various disciplines with a view to enriching the theological contribution of sermons in the years to come. The result will be a volume that has broad ecumenical appeal and that preachers will want at their fingertips. This volume is for The Revised Common Lectionary Year C.

2000 Catholic Press Association Award Winner! The Lectionary is made up of selected passages from the Bible, placed within a literary and liturgical context. This new context calls for a consideration of the liturgical character and setting of the Lectionary readings. Preaching the New Lectionary: Year B, offers readers that interpretation. Preaching the New Lectionary is unique. First, it employs a literary-liturgical way of interpreting all the readings of each Sunday and major feast of the liturgical year, including the often overlooked responsorial psalm. Second, it explicitly situates the interpretation of each day within the theology of its respective liturgical season. This theology is drawn from the specific themes of the readings that comprise that particular year rather than from more general themes associated with the season. The meaning of the entire season becomes the context for understanding the individual parts of it. Third, the lections are also read in sequential order from the first Sunday of that season to the last. This reading interprets the function of the literary forms, thus providing yet another way of interpreting the riches of the readings. This way of reading and understanding the Lectionary has potential for liturgical ministry. It can quicken the religious imagination of homilists, thus providing fresh new possibilities for liturgical preaching. It offers creative insights for those involved in the liturgical preparation for the celebration of feasts and seasons. It can also act as a valuable resource for liturgical catechesis. The insights included in Preaching the New Lectionary contribute toward enhancing the liturgical lives of the faithful.
