Of all Italian painters, Caravaggio (c. 1565-1609) speaks most intensely to the modern world. His early works suggest a fascination with his own youth and sexuality and the trancience of love and beauty his later religious art speaks of violence, passion, solitude and death. Ugly, almost brutal-looking, Caravaggio was constantly embroiled in fights and entangled with the law; the prototype anti-social artist, he moved between the worlds of powerful patrons and the street life of boys and prostitutes. Helen Langdon uncovers his progress from childhood in plague-ridden Milan to wild success in Rome, and eventual exile and persecution in the South, and sets his work against the political, intellectual and spiritual movements of the day. Fully illustrated, her dramatic portrait shows Carravigio's life to be as sensational and enigmatic as his powerful and enduring art.

This book is about appreciation; it is an attempt to explain what architecture essentially is, rather than merely what it looks like. Architecture an Inspiration is addressed to those who enjoy buildings, cities and landscapes, and would like to have a deeper appreciation and a basis for their likes and dislikes. A full appreciation demands careful observation, and in these pages there are many explorations of this sort. The book is divided into two parts: the first is about the nature of architecture, describing what is necessary. The chapter headings define the basic requirements that, to varying degrees, must always be met, such as facilitating activity, moderating climate, relating to context, respecting materials and structure, as well as conveying meaning and delight. The second part is about the nature of designing and focuses on what the designer brings to the task to arrive at a human and poetic synthesis. These different ways of thinking are elusive and not necessarily conscious; they include the use of reason and intuition, the value of experience and precedent, the role of metaphor and the search for harmony. For students this is difficult, because there is no ‘right’ way of designing. So much of what is written about the architecture of today is negative that it seemed opportune to take a positive approach and point to work that is good – now and in the past – and reiterate some timeless qualities. Architecture an Inspiration does not set out to be comprehensive; Ivor Smith chooses examples that he finds particularly inspiring from the work of a few selected architects. The book will appeal to those both interested in and studying architecture.

A franchise and fan base in perpetual search of validation finally had its ticket punched as 2016 dawned. Mike Piazza, who held records in one hand and a city’s rapt attention in the other, gained election to the Hall of Fame. Within weeks of this long-awaited announcement, the ballclub with whom he chose to cast his eternal lot, the New York Mets, made a date to retire his number. In Piazza: Catcher, Slugger, Icon, Star, Greg W. Prince—cocreator of Faith and Fear in Flushing, “the blog for Mets fans who like to read,” and author of Amazin’ Again, the story of the 2015 National League champions—explores the parallel paths Piazza and the Mets set out on in the early 1990s and how their individual journeys merged into a mutual quest for transcendence. From marriage of convenience to lifetime bond to a state of baseball grace reached only once before in team history, Piazza examines how the stranger from Los Angeles became New York’s favorite son and why Mets fans continued to rally to Piazza’s cause years after he took his final swing for them.

The material and intellectual presence of Egypt is at the heart of Western culture, religion and art from Antiquity to the present. This volume aims to provide a long term and interdisciplinary perspective on Egypt and its mnemohistory, taking theories on objects and their agency as its main point of departure. The central questions the book addresses are why, from the first millennium BC onwards, things and concepts Egyptian are to be found in such a great variety of places throughout European history and how we can account for their enduring impact over time. By taking a radically object-oriented perspective on this question, this book is also a major contribution to current debates on the agency of artefacts across archaeology, anthropology and art history.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra Beyond Good And Evil Hellenism Pessimism 3 Unbeatable Philosophy Books In One Volume written by Friedrich Nietzsche and has been published by e-artnow this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-17 with Literary Criticism categories.

"Thus Spake Zarathustra: A Book for All and None" chronicles the fictitious travels and speeches of Zarathustra, the founder of Zoroastrianism. Zarathustra contains the famous dictum "God is dead" and the concept of the "Übermensch" (overman or superman). In "Beyond Good and Evil" Nietzsche accuses past philosophers of lacking critical sense and blindly accepting dogmatic premises in their consideration of morality. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique in favour of what he regards as an affirmative approach. "The Birth of Tragedy or, Hellenism and Pessimism" is a work of dramatic theory which discusses the history of the tragic form and introduces an intellectual dichotomy between the Dionysian and the Apollonian. Nietzsche believed that in classical Athenian tragedy an art form that transcended the pessimism and nihilism of a fundamentally meaningless world. Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) was a German philosopher, cultural critic, poet, philologist, and Latin and Greek scholar whose work has exerted a profound influence on Western philosophy and modern intellectual history. Because of Nietzsche's evocative style and provocative ideas, his philosophy generates passionate reactions. His works remain controversial, due to varying interpretations and misinterpretations of his work. In the Western philosophy tradition, Nietzsche's writings have been described as the unique case of free revolutionary thought, that is, revolutionary in its structure and problems, although not tied to any revolutionary project

For The Love Of Rome written by John Ferris and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06 with Art categories.

In For the Love of Rome, John Ferris conveys his excitement in discovering the city of Rome through language that moves those unfamiliar with the enchanted city, as well as those who have often been there. The book is not about wars, persecutions, internal struggles for power within Roman and Vatican rule, nor cultural development. As Ferris said, "The book is about our experiences in [mid-1960s and -1970s] Rome, what drew my wife and me there, and what we learned by seeing and reading." The style is witty, amusing, and unfailingly interesting as he relates historical anecdotes and reveals Rome's impact on various major figures, including Charles Dickens, James Joyce, and many more.
