Beyond the Stars – Journeys into the Outer Cosmos is a breathtaking 4-in-1 exploration of the vast unknown, inviting readers to leave the familiar behind and venture into the deepest, most mysterious stretches of the universe. This collection blends scientific discovery with cosmic wonder, unraveling the enigmas that lie far beyond our solar system. In Beyond the Stars, embark on a sweeping journey past the boundaries of human exploration. Traverse distant galaxies, encounter ancient starlight, and uncover the scale of the cosmos that challenges comprehension. This section brings awe and perspective to our place in the universe. Dark Space Unveiled peels back the curtain on the immense, seemingly empty expanses that surround us. Though space may appear void, it teems with secrets—cold gas clouds, rogue planets, gravitational waves, and exotic phenomena that defy easy explanation. In The Veiled Universe, discover the hidden layers of reality that lurk behind what we can see. Delve into the mysteries of invisible forces, quantum structures, and space that might not be as empty as it seems. What lies beneath the cosmic veil? Finally, The Cosmic Dance paints a poetic picture of celestial motion—stars orbiting black holes, galaxies colliding, and the expansion of the universe itself. With elegance and energy, this section showcases the dynamic choreography of the cosmos in constant motion. Together, these four parts present a journey of mind and imagination, science and wonder. Beyond the Stars is your invitation to gaze outward, dream deeper, and confront the staggering vastness of all that lies beyond.

Beyond Weird written by Philip Ball and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-14 with Science categories.

“Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it.” Since Niels Bohr said this many years ago, quantum mechanics has only been getting more shocking. We now realize that it’s not really telling us that “weird” things happen out of sight, on the tiniest level, in the atomic world: rather, everything is quantum. But if quantum mechanics is correct, what seems obvious and right in our everyday world is built on foundations that don’t seem obvious or right at all—or even possible. An exhilarating tour of the contemporary quantum landscape, Beyond Weird is a book about what quantum physics really means—and what it doesn’t. Science writer Philip Ball offers an up-to-date, accessible account of the quest to come to grips with the most fundamental theory of physical reality, and to explain how its counterintuitive principles underpin the world we experience. Over the past decade it has become clear that quantum physics is less a theory about particles and waves, uncertainty and fuzziness, than a theory about information and knowledge—about what can be known, and how we can know it. Discoveries and experiments over the past few decades have called into question the meanings and limits of space and time, cause and effect, and, ultimately, of knowledge itself. The quantum world Ball shows us isn’t a different world. It is our world, and if anything deserves to be called “weird,” it’s us.

Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function in phase space is a special (Weyl) representation of the density matrix. It has been useful in describing quantum transport in quantum optics; nuclear physics; decoherence, quantum computing, and quantum chaos. It is also important in signal processing and the mathematics of algebraic deformation. A remarkable aspect of its internal logic, pioneered by Groenewold and Moyal, has only emerged in the last quarter-century: it furnishes a third, alternative, formulation of quantum mechanics, independent of the conventional Hilbert space, or path integral formulations. In this logically complete and self-standing formulation, one need not choose sides ? coordinate or momentum space. It works in full phase space, accommodating the uncertainty principle, and it offers unique insights into the classical limit of quantum theory. This invaluable book is a collection of the seminal papers on the formulation, with an introductory overview which provides a trail map for those papers; an extensive bibliography; and simple illustrations, suitable for applications to a broad range of physics problems. It can provide supplementary material for a beginning graduate course in quantum mechanics.

Today we are blessed with two extraordinarily successful theories of physics. The first is Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which describes the large-scale behaviour of matter in a curved spacetime. This theory is the basis for the standard model of big bang cosmology. The discovery of gravitational waves at the LIGO observatory in the US (and then Virgo, in Italy) is only the most recent of this theory's many triumphs. The second is quantum mechanics. This theory describes the properties and behaviour of matter and radiation at their smallest scales. It is the basis for the standard model of particle physics, which builds up all the visible constituents of the universe out of collections of quarks, electrons and force-carrying particles such as photons. The discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN in Geneva is only the most recent of this theory's many triumphs. But, while they are both highly successful, these two structures leave a lot of important questions unanswered. They are also based on two different interpretations of space and time, and are therefore fundamentally incompatible. We have two descriptions but, as far as we know, we've only ever had one universe. What we need is a quantum theory of gravity. Approaches to formulating such a theory have primarily followed two paths. One leads to String Theory, which has for long been fashionable, and about which much has been written. But String Theory has become mired in problems. In this book, Jim Baggott describes

Reach beyond space and time. Mingle the magic and wisdom of ancient societies with the hard science of modern quantum physics. Grasp the full depth of a many-dimensional instant universe described with geometry based on a world vision seen through the eyes of traditional cultures. The momentum of reality is in essence a "point of view" that includes all phenomenal objects and all forms of energy-as well as cognition, emotions, the laws of physics, the flow of time, the individuated self and causality. All of this exists, but in a much different fashion than how we typically understand it to be. However, it can be understood using a "different physics" based on ancient world views. "Beyond the Box of Space and Time" deconstructs physics as we know it, and then reassembles it as a new paradigm. The book, in three parts: PART I: THE ANCIENT COSMOS Recalling a lost tapestry of reality: The ancients called it a survival strategy, deep wisdom and a connection with the Earth. PART II: THE MIND AND PHYSICS Traversing the Shapes of Experience: Perception unfolding as a grand illusion; and thought forms framed as geometry. PART III: INSTANT PHYSICS Surveying a timeless universe: A radical new paradigm of physics based on conjoining geometry and ancient wisdom.

Imagine if The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy were a real, practical book about the mysteries of the universe . . . The Universe in Your Hand takes us on a wonder-filled journey to the surface of our dying sun, shrinks us to the size of an atom and puts us in the deathly grip of distant black holes. Along the way you might come to understand, really understand, the mind-bending science that underpins modern life, from quantum mechanics to Einstein's theory of general relativity. Through brilliant storytelling and humour rather than graphs and equations, internationally renowned astrophysicist Christophe Galfard has written an instant classic that brings the astonishing beauty of the universe to life – and takes us deep into questions about the beginning of time and the future of humanity.
