Identity is a keyword in a number of academic fields as well as in public debate and in politics. During the last decades, references to identity have proliferated, yet there is no simple definition available that corresponds to the use of the notion in all contexts. The significance of the notion depends on the conceptual or ideological constellation in which it takes part. This volume on one hand demonstrates the role of notions of identity in a variety of European contexts, and on the other hand highlights how there may be reasons to challenge the use of the term and corresponding social, cultural, and political practices. Notions of national identity and national politics are challenged by European integration, as well as by the increasing demographic heterogeneity due to migration, and migrants experience conflicts of identification stemming from clashes between cultural heritage and the cultures of the new habitat. European horizons - frames of mind, historical memories, and expectations at the level of groups or communities, at the national level, and at the general European level - are at odds. Analyzing a series of issues in European countries from Turkey to Spain and from Scandinavia to the Balkans, the contributions demonstrate uses and abuses of the notion of identity.

Since 1978, the changes brought on by China's reforms have had an inevitable and significant impact on the development of literature, the arts, and the whole spectrum of culture. As well, contemporary Chinese films have reflected this transition towards commercialization and internationalization, which has included constant changes in cultural policies and the economic conditions for film production. The articles in this collection argue that contemporary Chinese films display a profound shift in identity construction. They explore Chinese identities related to class, nation, and gender, and they highlight aspects of individual identity. All of these are marked by contradiction, tension, multiple versions, changes over time, and other evidence of contingency and construction. Zumindest biologisch gesehen sind wir alle gleich. Wir sind gleichermaßen Träger von Rechten und Pflichten.“ Leider ist diesem Zitat in keinster Weise zuzustimmen. Denn schon immer hat es in Gesellschaften Über- und Unterordnungen gegeben und es gibt sie noch. Früher standen die Herrscher und Adligen weit über den Leibeigenen oder Sklaven, heutzutage genießt eine Putzfrau weniger Ansehen als ein Manager. Doch woher kommt es zu solchen Unterschieden im „Wert“ eines Menschen? „Soziale Ungleichheit beginnt in einem soziologisch präzisen Sinn erst dort, wo aus sozialer Ungleichartigkeit oder Heterogenität über einen Bewertungsprozess soziale Ungleichwertigkeit oder kurz: Ungleichheit entsteht. Erst dieser Bewertungsprozess macht aus objektiven Unter-schieden [...] soziale Unterscheidungen.“ Diese Bewertung eines Individuums wird heute weitgehend von den Faktoren Bildung, Beruf und Einkommen geprägt. Diese werden im Laufe des Lebens eines Individuums erworben und bestimmen in modernen Gesellschaften hauptsächlich die soziale Stellung. Aber es gibt auch von Geburt an zugeschriebene Statusmerkmale, wie z.B. das Geschlecht oder die ethnische Zugehörigkeit. Ebenso können über die Sozialisation vermittelte körperbezogene Aspekte einen Teil zur Erklärung der Ungleichheit beitragen. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den gegenseitigen Beziehungen von Status und Körper. Zunächst wird die (soziale) Bedeutung des Körpers dargestellt. Danach soll geklärt werden, in welcher Art und Weise der Körper in eine Soziologie der sozialen Ungleichheit mit eingebunden werden kann. Dabei werden zwei Gliederungen von Cornelia Koppetsch – zur Theorie einer Soziologie des Körpers und zum Verhältnis von Körper und Status – zusammengefasst, um daraus ein in sich geschlossenes System darzustellen, was zumindest ansatzweise sämtlichen statusbezogenen Aspekten des Körpers Rechnung tragen soll. Die Themen in Kapitel drei werden demnach wie folgt aussehen: der Körper als Objekt, als Subjekt und seinen performativen Charakter. Danach wird er Körper als Zeichenträger als auch als intentional gewähltes Mittel der Selbstdarstellung sozialer Zugehörigkeiten betrachtet. Zum Schluss wird geklärt, warum der Körper aus einer Betrachtung der sozialen Ungleichheit nicht ausgeschlossen werden sollte. Allerdings ist die Literatur zu diesem Thema an vielen Stellen nicht explizit genug, so dass einige Stellen lediglich die Gedanken des Autors widerspiegeln.
