The Renaissance philosopher Pietro Pomponazzi (1462-1525) is mostly known for denying the human mind’s immateriality (and immortality) in accordance with his radical understanding of Aristotelianism. Pomponazzis Erkenntnistheorie attempts to reconstruct his theory of cognition. The author, Paolo Rubini, focuses on Pomponazzi’s scattered views about the mind’s ontological status and cognitive capacities, puts them into the context of Aristotelian-Scholastic psychology, and interprets them by reference to Pomponazzi’s ‘naturalistic’ approach to the human soul. Particular interest is devoted to the role of representations in cognitive acts, the functional link between intellect and imagination, and the process of abstraction. The study is based on Pomponazzi’s published writings about immortality as well as on unpublished records of his lectures about Aristotle’s De anima.

The intellectual history of the Middle Ages involves many earlier traditions and developments from them, but just as many completely new lines of thought. The influence of Classical Antiquity is always present: in the continuation and adaptation of late antique forms of education and intellectual training, but also in the works of the Latin Church Fathers and of the major ancient philosophers whose works were passed down and built upon in the Middle Ages. From the 12th century onwards Arabic-Islamic learning, which bore the clear stamp of Greek philosophy and science, became known in Latin-speaking Europe and was a catalyst for many new developments. In keeping with the educational system of the period, theology and philosophy, the latter being seen as a universal science, were the main vehicles of intellectual life. In logic, ethics and natural philosophy as well as in scientific theology, medieval scholars attained standards, which in some cases have not even been equalled today. 'Studien und Texte zur Geistesgeschichte des Mittelalters' aims to address itself to this cultural plurality with a correspondingly broad publication programme. It is open to specialist research into the influence of Classical philosophy, to text editions, to monographs on the history of various intellectual problems, to examinations of hitherto undiscovered or undervalued contributions by medieval thinkers to the development of thought. Conceived as an hommage for Edouard Jeauneau - maitre par excellence - the volume is introduced by a reconstruction of the Creation on the North portal of Chartres Cathedral, followed by a section on the transmission of significant texts, such as Plato's Timaeus, through the manuscript tradition. The chapter on later Greek philosophy contains studies on Plotinus and Augustine, Proclus, and Pseudo-Dionysius. A separate section interprets the thought of Johannes Scottus Eriugena, whose connections with earlier authors and influence on medieval neoplatonists constitutes a leitmotiv throughout the volume. The twelfth century is represented by articles on Gilbert of Poitiers on matter, Adelard of Bath, Honorius of Autun, Abelard's ethics and theology, monastic asceticism, Hildegard of Bingen's allegories, allegorical zoology, Alan of Lille's anthropology, the role of the Muses, and the Hermetic Asclepius. The particular usefulness of this study is its presentation of neoplatonic thought in its historical unfolding from Antiquity to the Later Middle Ages through a wide range of disciplines, focused on specific ideas and metaphors.

Zumindest biologisch gesehen sind wir alle gleich. Wir sind gleichermaßen Träger von Rechten und Pflichten.“ Leider ist diesem Zitat in keinster Weise zuzustimmen. Denn schon immer hat es in Gesellschaften Über- und Unterordnungen gegeben und es gibt sie noch. Früher standen die Herrscher und Adligen weit über den Leibeigenen oder Sklaven, heutzutage genießt eine Putzfrau weniger Ansehen als ein Manager. Doch woher kommt es zu solchen Unterschieden im „Wert“ eines Menschen? „Soziale Ungleichheit beginnt in einem soziologisch präzisen Sinn erst dort, wo aus sozialer Ungleichartigkeit oder Heterogenität über einen Bewertungsprozess soziale Ungleichwertigkeit oder kurz: Ungleichheit entsteht. Erst dieser Bewertungsprozess macht aus objektiven Unter-schieden [...] soziale Unterscheidungen.“ Diese Bewertung eines Individuums wird heute weitgehend von den Faktoren Bildung, Beruf und Einkommen geprägt. Diese werden im Laufe des Lebens eines Individuums erworben und bestimmen in modernen Gesellschaften hauptsächlich die soziale Stellung. Aber es gibt auch von Geburt an zugeschriebene Statusmerkmale, wie z.B. das Geschlecht oder die ethnische Zugehörigkeit. Ebenso können über die Sozialisation vermittelte körperbezogene Aspekte einen Teil zur Erklärung der Ungleichheit beitragen. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den gegenseitigen Beziehungen von Status und Körper. Zunächst wird die (soziale) Bedeutung des Körpers dargestellt. Danach soll geklärt werden, in welcher Art und Weise der Körper in eine Soziologie der sozialen Ungleichheit mit eingebunden werden kann. Dabei werden zwei Gliederungen von Cornelia Koppetsch – zur Theorie einer Soziologie des Körpers und zum Verhältnis von Körper und Status – zusammengefasst, um daraus ein in sich geschlossenes System darzustellen, was zumindest ansatzweise sämtlichen statusbezogenen Aspekten des Körpers Rechnung tragen soll. Die Themen in Kapitel drei werden demnach wie folgt aussehen: der Körper als Objekt, als Subjekt und seinen performativen Charakter. Danach wird er Körper als Zeichenträger als auch als intentional gewähltes Mittel der Selbstdarstellung sozialer Zugehörigkeiten betrachtet. Zum Schluss wird geklärt, warum der Körper aus einer Betrachtung der sozialen Ungleichheit nicht ausgeschlossen werden sollte. Allerdings ist die Literatur zu diesem Thema an vielen Stellen nicht explizit genug, so dass einige Stellen lediglich die Gedanken des Autors widerspiegeln.
