Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Medien sind heutzutage nicht mehr nur eine bloße Ergänzung des menschlichen Umfeldes, sie stellen vielmehr eine wichtige Komponente innerhalb der Tagesabläufe dar. Der Begriff der "Medienwelt" scheint deshalb richtig getroffen zu sein, da die Mediatisierung den Alltag der Menschen in allen Bereichen längst durchdrungen hat. Massenmedien sind Organisationen und Institutionen, die sich mit den technischen Mitteln der Massenvervielfältigung befassen. Bei der daraus resultierenden Massenkommunikation ist die Beziehung zwischen Kommunikator und Empfänger unpersönlicher und von größerer sozialer Distanz geprägt als bei der interpersonalen Kommunikation. Da Massenkommunikation zwar auf andere Individuen bezogen ist, sich aber nicht unmittelbar an deren Handeln orientiert, kann sie als "parasoziale Interaktion" verstanden werden. Die Entwicklung der Mediensysteme sowie die des gesellschaftlichen Umfeldes beeinflussen sich gegenseitig: Die technischen und organisatorischen Formen medialer Kommunikationsproduktionen ergeben sich aus dem Entwicklungsstand der Gesellschaft und entsprechen den Ansprüchen nach öffentlicher kollektiver Kommunikation. Gleichzeitig gehen von den Mediensystemen Impulse zu sozialen Veränderungen aus. Vor allem in den letzten Jahren konnte eine rasante Entwicklung der Medien beobachtet werden, die an dieser Stelle aufgezeigt werden soll. Das älteste Medium ist das Buch, das schon vor der Erfindung des Buchdrucks im 15. Jahrhundert zur Verbreitung religiöser und wissenschaftlicher Inhalte beitrug. Die Ausbreitung der Lesefähigkeit im 18. Jahrhundert erschloß dem Buch neue Absatzmärkte, und bis heute ist es ein Elitemedium geblieben. Die bekanntesten Vorläufer der Zeitung zur Befriedigung des Informationsbedarfes waren im 16. Jahrhundert die Fugger-Zeitungen. Das Bild in den Medien veränderte die Wirklichkeitserfahrung moderner Menschen. 1895 kam es zu ersten Filmvorführungen in Berlin und Paris, 1927 entstand der erste Tonfilm. Die Filmproduktionen suchten den Erfolg vor allem bei den Mittelschichten. Mit dem Radio begann das Zeitalter elektronischer Massenmedien. Die ersten regelmäßigen Sendungen fanden 1923 in Berlin statt, 1924 wurden überall in Deutschland Radiosender gegründet. In den 30er Jahren wurde das Fernsehen zum Kommunikationsträger, setzte sich aber erst nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg durch und wurde zum Massenmedium. 1950 schlossen sich die Landesrundfunkanstalten zu einem bundesweiten [...]

Given the increasing attention to managing, publishing, and preserving research datasets as scholarly assets, what competencies in working with research data will graduate students in STEM disciplines need to be successful in their fields? And what role can librarians play in helping students attain these competencies? In addressing these questions, this book articulates a new area of opportunity for librarians and other information professionals, developing educational programs that introduce graduate students to the knowledge and skills needed to work with research data. The term "data information literacy" has been adopted with the deliberate intent of tying two emerging roles for librarians together.
