प्रेमचंद जन्म-शताब्दी’ (1980-81) के अवसर पर कई राष्ट्रीय महत्त्व के कार्य हुए। इनमें मेरे द्वारा स्थापित ‘प्रेमचंद जन्म-शताब्दी राष्ट्रीय समिति’, दिल्ली के गठन के साथ ‘प्रेमचंद: विश्वकोश’ (खंड एक व दो) का प्रकाशन तथा अमृतराय द्वारा इसका लोकार्पण विशेष रूप से उल्लेखनीय है। इस शताब्दी-वर्ष में मैंने लगभग 50 हिंदी पत्र-पत्रिकाओं के विशेषांक निकलवाए और मॉरीशस में शताब्दी-समारोह में जैनेंद्र के साथ मैंने भारतीय प्रतिनिधि के रूप में भाग लिया। ‘प्रेमचंद : विश्वकोश’ के खंडों का हिंदी-समाज में व्यापक रूप से स्वागत किया। इसके दूसरे खंड में प्रेमचंद साहित्य का तथ्यात्मक परिचय और सारांश दिया गया था, अर्थात् उनके उपन्यासों, कहानियों, नाटकों, अनुवादों, पत्र-संग्रहों, बाल-पुस्तकों आदि की पूर्ण तथ्यात्मक जानकारी दी गई थी, जिससे पाठक उनकी प्रत्येक रचना से, चाहे वह छोटा हो या बड़ा अथवा उच्चकोटि की हो या साधारण, सभी के संबंध में जानकारी प्राप्त कर सकें और उनका सारांश भी वह कृति/रचना को मूल रूप में पढ़े बिना जान सकें। ‘प्रेमचंद : विश्वकोश’ का हिंदी-संसार ने बड़ा स्वागत किया और आज भी उसकी माँग बराबर बनी हुई है। ‘प्रेमचंद : विश्वकोश’ के दूसरे खंड में, जिसे ‘प्रेमचंद के साहित्य’ के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया था, प्रेमचंद की उपलब्ध कहानियों का तथा मेरे द्वारा खोजी गई कुछ कहानियों का भी तथ्यात्मक परिचय एवं सारांश दिया गया था, परंतु उसके बाद मुझे प्रेमचंद की कुछ और लुप्त एवं दुर्लभ कहानियाँ मिलती रहीं और वे सब ‘पे्रमचंद का अप्राप्य साहित्य’ (1988) में प्रकाशित की गईं। इस प्रकार ‘मानसरोवर’ की 203 कहानियाँ तथा अमृतराय के ‘गुप्तधन’ में प्रकाशित 56 कहानियों के बाद कुल उपलब्ध कहानियों की संख्या 299 हो गई। Premchand Kahani Kosh by Kamal Kishore Goenka celebrates the literary genius of Munshi Premchand, an iconic Indian author. प्रेमचन्द कहानी समग्र प्रेमचन्द के बिना हिंदी ही नहीं बल्कि भारतीय कथा साहित्य पर कोई भी बातचीत असंभव है। वे उन थोड़े से भारतीय कथाकारों में एक हैं जिनकी रचना-परिधि हर कालखंड के पाठक को विस्मित करती है। आज का पाठक प्रेमचंद को पढ़ता है और इस बात पर चकित होता है कि इस भविष्यद्रष्टा सर्जक ने लगभग अस्सी वर्ष पहले उन समस्याओं पर डूबकर विचार किया था जिनकी वजह से समकालीन समाज अवनति की ओर जा रहा है। वह उनकी कहानियों की विषय वस्तु की विविधता पर भी चकित और मुग्ध होता है। प्रेमचंद को पढ़ते हुए वह एक ऐसे स्रष्टा से परिचित होता है जो अपनी पूर्णता में कालजीवी भी था और कालजयी भी है। यह अकारण नहीं है कि प्रेमचंद की रचनाओं में हर सच्चा भारतीय अपने हिस्से का प्रकाश ढूंढता और पाता है। शायद ही कोई ऐसा पाठक हो जो प्रेमचंद-साहित्य के पास से उदास लौटा हो। प्रेमचंद भारतीय समाज के गहरे जानकार थे। वे समस्याओं को सतही ढंग से समझने और अभिव्यक्त करने के विरुद्ध थे। यही कारण है कि उन्होंने भारतीय समाज को क्षति पहुंचाने वाली समस्याओं की गहरी पड़ताल की और अपने कथा-साहित्य में उसे आलोचनात्मक विवेक के साथ चित्रित किया। प्रेमचंद के लेखन से यह स्पष्ट है कि उनकी हर संभव कोशिश थी कि उनकी रचनाएं मनुष्यता की रक्षा और निर्वाह का साधन बनें। आज भी भारतीय समाज के समक्ष कई चुनौतियां हैं। आज भी कई समस्याएं मुंह बाए खड़ी हैं। ऐसे में प्रेमचंद का साहित्य मार्गदर्शक की तरह है। वह हमें हमारी गलतियों का बोध कराता है और उससे उबरने का विवेक भी देता है।
