लोक परंपरा एवं जनश्रुतियों के अनुसार इटावा एक पौराणिक जनपद है। उपनिषद् युग के ऋषियों, महाभारतकालीन कथाओं, बौद्धयुगीन स्मारकों, मुगलकालीन अवशेषों एवं ब्रिटिशकालीन प्रतीकों तथा स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के योद्धाओं की कहानियाँ समेटे इटावा की अपनी अलग पहचान है। इटावा जिले की अन्य जिलों से जुड़ी सीमाएँ तथा उसकी सीमावर्ती क्षेत्र की बोलियाँ कई भिन्नताएँ लिये हुए हैं, जिनका अध्ययन पहली बार इस शोध ग्रंथ में किया गया है। आगरा जिले की पूर्वी सीमा, विशेष रूप से बाह तहसील के पूर्वी भाग से इटावा की सीमा जुड़ती है। इटावा जिले का यह भाग ‘भदावर’ के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है और इस बोली को ‘भदावरी’ उल्लिखित किया गया है। इटावा जिले में यमुना नदी के उत्तर का भाग जहाँ अधिक उपजाऊ है, वहीं यमुना नदी के दक्षिण का भाग ऊँचे-नीचे कगारों और बीहड़ों वाला है। मिट्टी के कटाव के कारण गहरे-गहरे खड्ड तथा ऊँचे टीले यमुना और चंबल के दोआब में देखे जा सकते हैं। जिले में कुछ जंगली क्षेत्र इटावा, भरथना तथा औरैया तहसील के दक्षिणी भागों में देखने को मिलते हैं। जिले में प्रमुख नदियाँ यमुना, चंबल, क्वारी, सिंध, पहुज, सेंगर, अरिंद हैं। इटावा जिले की बोलियों एवं भाषा का तुलनात्मक एवं सम्यक् विवेचन इस पुस्तक में है, जो शिक्षार्थियों, शोधकर्ताओं आदि के लिए बेहद उपयोगी है।
