Excerpt from Bible Lands: Their Modern Customs and Manners Illustrative of Scripture In every nation, however, usages are found which can not be explained or accounted for by a reference to the physical char acter of the country. These customs have an historical original, lost and forgotten, perhaps, in the lapse of time, but still main taining its sway over the minds and manners of those who have inherited them. The fact that the customs now prevalent in Bible lands are so different from those of the West, and yet es sentially identical with the ancient manners of the East, is of the greatest practical importance to the Biblical student. The Hebrew commonwealth has perished; its people are scattered among all the nations of the earth, whose manners they have adopted. The principal clue, therefore, to what they once were, and our chief means of explaining much that is obscure in Holy Writ, will be found in the customs of the modern East. And we prepose, in the second part of the present work, to consider all such details of Oriental life as appear to have, in the main, an historical origin. Excerpt from The Land and the Book: Or Biblical Illustrations Drawn From the Manners and Customs, the Scenes and Scenery of the Holy Land During the last twenty-five years the attention of the Christian world has been directed to the Holy Land in ways and to an extent heretofore unknown. Learned and scientific explorers have penetrated every part of it, and given to the public the results of their researches. Commentaries, Bible dictionaries, books of travel, maps, plans, guide-books, pictures, and photographs have been greatly multiplied. The Palestine Exploration Fund of England has made a thorough survey of Palestine proper, and the American Exploration Society has sent several expeditions to the regions east of the Jordan and the Dead Sea. In these and in other ways a great amount of new information in regard to Bible lands and the Bible itself has been accumulated ; and the author has endeavored to incorporate in this work the most valuable results of modern research and discovery. The main object being Biblical Illustration, the number of Scripture passages introduced is large. The Bible is made to speak for itself, in its own peculiar phraseology: hence the many direct, literal quotations. No consecutive comment on any particular book of the Bible is attempted, but the author selects from all such passages as contain or suggest the themes lie desires to elucidate.
