A Theology in Outline: Can These Bones Live? began with an undergraduate course taught by Robert W. Jenson at Princeton University in the spring of 2008. Based on a series of twenty-three course lectures, it offers a concise and accessible overview of Christian theology while retaining the atmosphere of Jenson's classroom. Much as does Jenson's Systematic Theology, A Theology in Outline treats a standard sequence of doctrines in Christian theology--God, Trinity, creation, humanity, sin, salvation, church, among others. Severely handicapped as the result of a merciless beating at age 10 by his schoolteacher, Pardington did not let physical suffering suppress his victorious spirit or his keen sense of humor. He regaled his students with his wit and motivated them by the warmth of his unwavering devotion to Jesus Christ and the Scriptures. Published posthumously following the author's untimely death in 1915 at age 49, has been in continuous print for nearly three-quarters of a century. Excerpt from Christian Theology in Outline The book which follows owes its origin to a practical purpose. It is the outgrowth of the authors experience as a teacher of theology, and is the attempt to meet a definite need which that experience disclosed, - that, namely, of a brief handbook, at once scientific and constructive, in which the subject-matter of Christian theology should be treated from the modern point of view, and the new conceptions and ideals which have been more or less consciously affecting Christian theology should be set forth in their inner consistency, and in their true relation to their antecedents in the past. A considerable part of the material which the book contains was originally given to my students in the form of type-written notes, and has been tested by repeated use in the classroom. With the exception of the chapter on the Trinity, however, a part of which was included in an address delivered before the Alumni of the Union Theological Seminary, and since published under the title, "The Trinity and Modern Thought: An Experiment in Theological Reconstruction," no part of the matter here offered has appeared in print. The change of form has given a welcome opportunity of revision and enlargement. While the original purpose of the book as a textbook for the theological classroom has been strictly adhered to, I have not been unmindful of the wider public who are interested in theological questions.
