Vamos fazer um recorte na questão da literatura africana, ficaremos restritos a de expressão portuguesa, que nasceu de uma situação histórica originada no século XV, época em que os lusitanos, como os historiadores, poetas, escritores de viagens, homens de ciências, cronistas e das grandes literaturas chegaram ao continente africano. Vem do século XV, a literatura que menciona os “bárbaros reinos” do além-mar, no início chamaram-na de literatura dos descobrimentos, que não é a literatura africana de língua portuguesa, mas registra um quadro cultural, político sobre o que se chamou “colonização da África”. Vem depois o aparecimento de uma nova literatura, a “literatura colonial africana” (1900-1939) que usava a vivência dos portugueses no além-mar, mesclando história e literatura tendo o homem europeu racista e não o homem africano (tido como inferior) como eixo central. Teorias que levaram horror a vida de escritores do porte de Cruz e Sousa, brasileiro negro do século XIX, como as de Gobineau, e as do filósofo Lévy Bruhl apontavam para uma mentalidade pré-lógica no povo negro. A África era mostrada como uma linda paisagem, um Éden onde o protagonista eram o homem europeu que cultuava a exploração do homem pelo homem. Mas com o tempo surgiram autores como João de Lemos (Almas Negras) e José Osório de Oliveira (Roteiro de África) que trouxeram visões mais justas sobe este absurdo.
