This volume deals with authors in exile - those writers who were forced to leave their home country after the National Socialists seized power in 1933. Although many of the authors have continued to receive recognition in their particular fields, whether film or adult literature, one group of artists has been overlooked - the authors and illustrators of children's literature. Now for the first time German Children's and Youth Literature in Exile, 1933-1050, has recorded and made accessible a wealth of information on these German-speaking authors and illustrators who emigrated to many different countries and regions of the world. German Children's and Youth Literature in Exile, 1933-1950, contains biographies of 101 authors and illustrators of children and youth literature as well as bibliographies of the books written and illustrated by them that were published in exile between 1933 and 1950. Included are authors who were born before 1918 in Germany or in areas of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire and who lived or worked in Germany or Austria until 1933. Many of them were forced to emigrate because their lives were endangered. Some of them left before the repressive measures of the National Socialists were implemented, in order to maintain their intellectual and artistic freedom. The exile countries they chose were the United States, Great Britain, Switzerland, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, France, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Finland, Poland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Australia, Canada, China and Palestine/Israel. Among the authors listed in this volume are Kurt Held (Die rote Zora und ihre Bande 1941), Irmgard Keun (Nac.

This is the first complete bibliography of the writings of Yvan Goll (1891-1950), the French-German poet, novelist, dramatist, journalist and translator. The first part gives full details of Goll's publications during his lifetime, and includes books and pamphlets, contributions to periodicals, newspapers and anthologies, books and journals edited by Goll, translations by Goll, and his published letters. The second part makes it possible to trace the dissemination of Goll's work, with posthumous first publications, posthumous reprints in periodicals and anthologies, translations of Goll's works by others (into twenty languages) and musical collaborations and settings. A comprehensive index of titles or first lines allows the user to trace single works through the various sections; there are also indexes of writers translated by Goll and letters by recipient. This bibliography documents the huge scope of the writings of an author who wrote in three major languages and published in many countries. It contains a wide range of references to texts hitherto unknown, many of them items in journals and newspapers, and is by far the most reliable source to date of what Goll actually wrote.

Deutschsprachige Exilliteratur seit 1933 provides an overview of German-speaking exile literature in the USA. Exiled authors are those German-speaking authors who emigrated during the Thirties due to political or ethnic reasons, resulting directly or indirectly from Hitler's taking power. Exile literature refers not to the works of former emigrants after their return, but to the literature written by emigrants during their exile. The series includes film, theatre and literary essays in addition to the belles-lettres. With the publishing of part-volume 3/V the series is now complete! Volume 1 and 2 focus mainly on emigrantion: Volume 1 - California covers individuals such as Thomas Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger und Bertolt Brecht as well as authors who worked for the film industry in Hollywood, like Billy Wilder. Volume 2 - New York is concerned with emigrants who went to New York, the arena for some of the most significant controversies regarding National Socialism and exile. Volume 3, published in five parts, present portraits of more than 80 literary figures. Volume 3/III to 3/V contains further portraits of authors along with articles dealing specifically with the problems of emigration and the conditions in which emigrants had to live. The current Volume 3/V offers a thoroughly revised and completed table 'Exiljahre in den USA' (years of exile in the USA), listing the exact details of the period spent in exile, by all those German-speaking authors listed in volume 5. Volume 4 contains, in three part volumes, a total of 225 personal bibliographies, of which 150 are first bibliographies.
