Beyond Drugs Smuggling And Trafficking written by Gabriella Sanchez and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-27 with Social Science categories.

Graphic depictions of crime in Mexico abound in the global imagination, fueled not merely by media representations, but also by an abundant body of scholarship that reproduces grotesque, simplistic characterizations of Mexico’s people, cities and towns as crime-ridden and almost inherently violent. These representations, however, often lack evidence and forgo important contextual analyses, not to mention fail to incorporate the perspectives of its actors in the research development process. This collection of essays shows how community-based research efforts to examine practices like kidnapping, migrant smuggling, human trafficking, sex work and citizen-led forensics in Mexico can effectively correct methodological and conceptual gaps present in Mexico’s dominant organized crime narrative, while providing effective mechanisms to inform academic and policy debates. This easy-to-read volume provides a much-needed re-assessment of Mexico’s organized crime rhetoric, and also outlines a pathway for those interested in developing critical empirical research on illicit and criminalized practices. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Victims & Offenders.

This book introduces a different account, though no less bitter, voiced by the victims, who reveal their day to day during their kidnapping, the physical and psychological consequences in their lives, how they interacted with their kidnappers and how they reacted in the face of torture and rape, among many other chilling confessions. The Hell We Dread: Kidnapping in Mexico is a one-of-a-kind document that unveils the innards of crime; not to judge from immediacy, but to reflect upon what we can do to end the violence destroying Mexico. In Mexico, kidnapping is a crime that has evolved and grown exponentially—it tears the lives of millionaires and men and women of small means all the same. In this book, Saskia Niño de Rivera and Manuel López San Martín warn against the circumstances in which abductions occur, question the justice system, and insist on the need to gain an in-depth knowledge of the social context regarding the perpetrators and the victims, in order to fight this crime. For the first time ever, we find the revelations of Mexico’s most implacable kidnappers gathered in a book—cruel maimers, sadly famous for the brutality of their actions. It is a detailed account on why they became kidnappers, what was their childhood like, as well as their family circle, how they deprived people of their liberty and why they coldly murdered some of them.

The Migration Industry And The Commercialization Of International Migration written by Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-03 with Political Science categories.

Migration has become business, big business. Over the last few decades a host of new business opportunities have emerged that capitalize both on the migrants’ desires to migrate and the struggle by governments to manage migration. From the rapid growth of specialized transportation and labour immigration companies, to multinational companies managing detention centres or establishing border security, to the organized criminal networks profiting from human smuggling and trafficking, we are currently witnessing a growing commercialization of international migration. This volume claims that today it is almost impossible to speak of migration without also speaking of the migration industry. Yet, acknowledging the role the migration industry plays prompts a number of questions that have so far received only limited attention among scholars and policy makers. The book offers new concepts and theory for the study of international migration by bringing together cross-disciplinary theoretical explorations and original case studies. It also provides a global coverage of the phenomena under study, covering migrant destinations in Europe, the United States and Asia, and migrant sending regions in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Mobile And Entangled America S written by Maryemma Graham and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-12 with Political Science categories.

A superb combination of focused case studies and high level conceptual thinking, this volume is an important monument in the ongoing development of Inter-American studies The articles gathered here closely examine a wide variety of cultural phenomena implicated in the 'entanglements' which have defined the history of the Americas. From religious networks to music and dance, and across a range of literary and artistic works, the mobility of people, objects, and ideas in the Americas is expertly mapped. At the same time, the book represents a serious enterprise of theory-building. Drawing on the histories of postcolonial thought, mobility studies, and work on human migration, Mobile and Entangled America(s) clearly establishes a new interdisciplinary field attentive both to the complexities of cultural form and the pervasiveness of power relations. Each article stands as a significant piece of scholarship on its own, but all are in dialogue with each other. The result is a richly satisfying and important volume of cultural scholarship.
