A multidisciplinary analysis of sectarianism and bigotry in Scottish football Sectarianism and bigotry are among the most publicly debated issues in Scotland, often reported in the newspapers as the "e;shame"e; of Scotland's national game. The current crisis in Scottish football includes high profile controversies and disorder related to bigotry and sectarianism which resulted in new legislation to tackle offensive behaviour in and beyond football grounds. In this collection, contributors from a range of disciplinary positions present the latest empirical research evidence and social theory to examine and debate fundamental issues about bigotry in Scottish football and society. The topic has raised many questions. How should sectarianism and bigotry be defined and understood? What are the experiences and impacts of bigotry on different populations in Scotland? Are recent events unique or do they have historic precedents and contemporary comparisons beyond Scotland? What should be the response of government, football authorities, clubs, football supporters and other institutions and organisations in Scotland regarding legislation? What vision should we have for a future Scottish society and its diverse population? Bigotry, Football and Scotland will appeal to all those interested in Scotland's national game, the role of football in the 21st Century and how multicultural contemporary societies attempt to resolve prejudice and promote diversity.

In one of the most controversial lectures of recent times, Scotland's foremost composer, James MacMillan, accused his country of being a land of `sleep-walking bigotry' where visceral anti-Catholicism' disfigures national life. Pandora's Box, it turned out, had been opened in truly spectacular fashion. By his remarks, the media became obsessed with the issue and for weeks Scotland's broadsheets were crammed with columns and letters exploring all aspects of the topic. Clearly MacMillan had touched a nerve. Was Scotland really `Northern Ireland without the guns and bullets'? Although the debate was intense, however, few contributions rose above the level of swapping competing anecdotes. More heat then light was generated in the process. It soon became clear there was a crying need for more reflective assessments and for hard evidence to confirm or deny the many assertions made in the course of the discussion. Scotland's Shame is the first book since the MacMillan lecture to tackle the issues he raised head on. A team consisting of the best writers, researchers and academics in the field has produced a readable volume which is accessible in approach to everyone interested in the subject. Their conclusions will often surprise and intrigue.

Managing Expectations And Policy Responses To Racism In Sport written by Keir Reeves and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-02 with Sports & Recreation categories.

This volume presents research on policy responses to racism in sporting codes, predominantly Australian Rules football, in a global context. While the three guest editors are based in Australia, and their work pertains to the uniquely domestic game of Australian Rules football, the outcomes, research vectors and key issues from this research are part of a much larger on-going international conversation that is equally relevant when considering, for instance, racism in English Premier League football, first class cricket and basketball. The book is an outcome of an Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project titled Assessing the Australian Football League’s Racial and Religious Vilification Laws to Promote Community Harmony, Multiculturalism and Reconciliation, which investigated social participation and the impact of the Australian Football League’s anti-racial vilification policy since its introduction in 1995. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

This is the first book to focus on the interrelated issues of social control and disorder in football. It shows how the ‘beautiful game’ illuminates our understanding of the mechanisms and techniques of social control and regulation in contemporary societies. It explores past, new, and continued responses from law enforcers, football associations, sport’s governing bodies, the media, and international organizations to issues of disorder and misbehaviour in football, and how this is highly contested by fans and fan groups. Featuring the work of an international team of leading researchers in football and sport-related studies, the book examines key contemporary trends and topics including fan activism, football-specific legislation, power, violence, fan rivalries, subcultures, the policing of crowds, social sorting, and surveillance. Featuring diverse international cases, including the Qatar World Cup, stadium protests in Portland, Oregon, spectator violence in Polish football, social media and Brazilian football, and sectarianism in Scottish football, the book also looks ahead to what the future holds for the world’s most popular sport. While rivalry is embedded in any sporting event or performance, soccer, the world’s most popular mass spectator sport, has been an emblem of such rivalries since its inception as an organized sport. Some of these rivalries grow to become long-term and perennial by their nature, extent, impact and legacy, from the local to the global level. They represent identities based on widely diverse affiliations of human life—locality, region, nation, continent, community, class, culture, religion, ethnicity, and so on. Yet, at times, such rivalries transcend barriers of space and time, where soccer-clubs, -nations, -personalities, -organizations, -styles and -fans float and compete with intriguing identities. The present volume brings into focus some of the most fascinating and enduring rivalries in the world of soccer. It attempts to encapsulate, analyse and reconstruct those rivalries—between nations, between clubs, between personalities, between styles of play, between fandoms, and between organizations—in a historical perspective in relation to diverse identities, competing ideologies, contestations of power, psychologies of attachment, bonds of loyalty, notions of enmity, articulations of violence, and affinities of fan culture—some of the core manifestations of sporting rivalry. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Soccer & Society.

Celtic and Rangers. Glasgow Giants. The Bhoys and the Bears. The 'Old Firm'. Despite the rivalry of the great Glasgow teams, their traditions are inextricably intertwined in what has been called 'a business based on bigotry'. Rangers entered a new world of sport and big business in April 1986 when they signed Graeme Souness as player and manager, and more notably when he was joined by a new owner, millionaire businessman David Murray. Both were committed to taking the Ibrox club into the elite of European football - even at the expense of signing Catholic players, which the club had hitherto avoided.Celtic were slow to react to this challenge but after years of squabbling found unlikely salvation in th form of expatriate millionaire Fergus McCann. Under McCann and Murray the Old Firm rivalry was modernised beyond recognition as the clubs entered a new world of globalised sport in which the bigotry of the past was a barrier to the riches awaiting Europe's top footballing sides. After five momentous years at Celtic. McCann left the club shortly after the frustrated Rangers attempt to beat the Jock Stein record of nine League flags in a row. With that albatross removed from the necks of both clubs, it might have been expected that a sense of sanity would prevail. But turmoil continued: new managers came and went and after an interlude with Dutch coaches both teams sought inspiration nearer home: Celtic with Ulster-born Catholic Martin O'Neill and Rangers with former Aberdeen and Scotland player Alex McLeish. In the mean time, Murray passed the chairmanship at Ibrox to John McCelland and once more the two clubs seemed to have entered another era. it was one in which the past continued to haunt them, however. Celtic with their 'Bhoys Against Bigotry' campaign and Rangers with their 'Pride Over Prejudice' project tried to present a new image of the Old Firm, emphasising the best aspectss of their long history. Getting rid of their old image, though has often seemed...

This is the first book to examine football (soccer) through the lens of diaspora studies. Presenting case studies from across four continents, it considers how diasporic minorities develop a sense of belonging between their national and transnational ethnic communities through an active participation in football. Bringing together a cross-disciplinary group of scholars working in anthropology, communication, cultural studies, history, psychology, politics, sociology and sport, it unearths the connections between culture, identities, politics, nationalism, globalization, and how those manifest in the lived experience of diasporic peoples. Against a background of the continued internationalization of sport and pervasive global migration, it explores key themes in the social sciences including migration, acculturation, and assimilation; sport, identity, fandom, and representation; and nationhood, citizenship, and politics. As the book focuses on diverse ethnoreligious groups dispersed around the world, it covers a wide range of geographic locations, with cases addressing the Bolivian, Ethiopian, Moroccan, Zimbabwean, Croatian, Irish, and Basque diasporas. It is fascinating reading for anybody working in sport studies, diaspora studies, political science, sociology, cultural studies, international history or social history.
