Across the nineteenth century European history, philology, archaeology, art, and architecture turned from a common classical vocabulary and ideology to images of pasts and origins drawn primarily from the Middle Ages. The result was a paradox, as scholars and artists, schooled in the same pan-European vocabularies and methodologies nevertheless sought to discover through them unique and, frequently, oppositional national identities. Der literarische Umgang mit der Vergangenheit in der ästhetischen Moderne am Beispiel dreier Autoren. Die ästhetische Moderne des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts bricht nicht einfach mit der Vergangenheit, sie experimentiert mit Modellen komplexer Zeitlichkeit. Dazu gehören Rückgriffe auf das Mittelalter, die weder bloß punktuellen Charakter haben, noch primär die Vergangenheit instrumentalisieren. Das Interesse gilt einer spezifischen Mischung aus Gültigem und Abgelebtem, die sich ebenso von dem unterscheidet, was ästhetisch noch unmittelbar berührt (Renaissance), wie von dem, was bildungsgeschichtlich zum allgemeinen Reservoir gehört (Antike). Kiening zeigt, was die fast zeitgleich entstandenen Werke von Rilke, Pound und Borchardt verbindet: der Versuch, die Moderne in sich zu transformieren, sie durch den Bezug auf Vergangenes anzureichern.
