Schulpolitik, Note: 2,0, Universität Mannheim, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Bildungseinrichtung des Gymnasiums lässt sich, bei genügend großer Toleranz, bis auf die Platonische Akademie zurückführen. Sie entwickelt sich in der späteren Geschichte über die Kloster, Dom- und Stiftsschulen im 5. Jahrhundert, die Lateinschulen Melanchtons (16. Jahrhundert), den neuhumanistischen Schulen im 18. Jahrhundert hin zu dem, was heute als Gymnasium bekannt ist. Immer wieder fällt in diesem Zusammenhang der Name Wilhelm von Humboldts als großem Bildungsreformer des 19. Jahrhunderts und es wird auf seinen scheinbar bis in die heutige Zeit reichenden Einfluss auf das deutsche Bildungssystem verwiesen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll unter Anderem geklärt werden, unter welchen Umständen Humboldts Reformen überhaupt realisierbar und auch notwendig wurden. Zudem wird sein Begriff der Bildung näher betrachtet, ohne den es nicht möglich ist, die Reformpläne nachzuvollziehen und beurteilen zu können, ob und in wie weit die Ansätze Humboldts in das heutige deutsche Bildungssystem reichen. Die Hauptfrage der vorliegenden Arbeit ist also: Welchen Begriff bzw. welche Vorstellung hatte Humboldt von Bildung - und wie sollte diese Menschenbildung realisiert werden? Ferner wird die von ihm konzipierte Bildungsreform und der geplante Aufbau des Schulsystems skizziert und an geeigneter Stelle kurz auf die Gegenwart verwiesen. Ein Schwerpunkt wird hierbei auf das Gymnasium gelegt, da es, zumindest vom Namen und dem Selbstverständnis her, die traditionsreichste Bildungsform in Europa ist.

In this book, John H. Smith investigates the influences of classical and humanistic rhetoric on Hegel's theory and practice of philosophical representation. Wilhelm von Humboldt ist zwar tot und das seit über 170 Jahren, aber er ist nicht vergessen. Seine Gedanken sind nach wie vor so lebendig, dass sein Name und die von ihm vertretenen Grundsätze wiederholt Anklang in der heutigen Bildungsdebatte finden. Im Bemühen um die Lösung bestehender Erziehungs- und Bildungsprobleme, wie dem sinkenden Leistungsniveau an Schulen und der vorherrschenden Orientierungslosigkeit unter jungen Menschen berufen sich Politiker, Pädagogen und andere Fachleute auf Humboldt oder sie verwerfen ihn. Es gibt sehr unterschiedliche Auffassungen darüber, inwieweit Humboldts Bildungsidee heute noch Einfluss hat, wenn es darum geht, aktuelle Bildungsprozesse zu gestalten. Fest steht, dass sein Geist den wissenschaftlichen Diskurs beflügelt und eine Vielzahl von Autoren das Werk Humboldts auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise gewürdigt haben. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird aber nicht die Rezeptionsgeschichte Humboldts, sondern der historische Charakter seiner Person im Zentrum stehen. Hierbei kommt es mir vor allem darauf an, das Thema "Humboldt und Bildung" in erster Linie mit Hilfe seiner Gesammelten Werke zu bearbeiten und das Ursprüngliche seiner schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit hervorzuheben. In der vorliegenden Arbeit geht es mir auch nicht darum, Wilhelm von Humboldt und seine Theorie der Bildung des Menschen in die aktuelle Bildungsdebatte einzubringen. American higher education was transformed between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of World War I. During this period, U.S. colleges underwent fundamental changes--changes that helped to create the modern university we know today. Most significantly, the study of the sciences and the humanities effectively dissolved the Protestant framework of learning by introducing a new secularized curriculum. This secularization has long been recognized as a decisive turning point in the history of American education. Until now, however, there has been remarkably little attention paid to the details of how this transformation came about. Here, at last, Jon Roberts and James Turner identify the forces and explain the events that reformed the college curriculum during this era. The first section of the book examines how the study of science became detached from theological considerations. Previously, one of the primary pursuits of "natural scientists" was to achieve an understanding of the workings of the divine in earthly events. During the late nineteenth century, however, scientists reduced the scope of their inquiries to subjects that could be isolated, measured, and studied objectively. In pursuit of "scientific truth," they were drawn away from the larger "truths" that they had once sought. On a related path, social scientists began to pursue the study of human society more scientifically, attempting to generalize principles of behavior from empirically observed events. The second section describes the revolution that occurred in the humanities, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, when the study of humanities was largely the study of Greek and Latin. By 1900, however, the humanities were much more broadly construed, including such previously unstudied subjects as literature, philosophy, history, and art history. The "triumph of the humanities" represented a significant change in attitudes about what constituted academic knowledge and, therefore, what should be a part of the college curriculum. The Sacred and the Secular University rewrites the history of higher education in the United States. It will interest all readers who are concerned about American universities and about how the content of a "college education" has changed over the course of the last century.
