Die Fugger I. Geschichte der Fugger 1. Die Anfänge des Fuggerimperiums Zu Beginn der Neuzeit spielte der Name Fugger in der Handels- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte nicht nur Augsburg, sondern Deutschlands und Europas , eine überaus große Rolle. Obwohl die Fugger aus kleinbürgerlichen Verhältnissen hervorgingen, war ihnen innerhalb erstaunlicher Zeit ein Aufschwung gegönnt, der sie als bedeutendeste Geldmacht ihrer Zeit dastehen ließ. Für heutige Verhältnisse ist es unvorstellbar, welcher Reichtum und welche Macht in den Händen der Konzernchefs Jakob und Anton Fugger konzentriert waren. Man hat vor Jahren errechnet, dass die wirtschaftliche Bedeutung des Hauses Fugger zu seiner Glanzzeit, etwa der eines Konzerns mit rund 100 der größten Unternehmen in Deutsch -land entsprochen haben soll. Doch wie kam es dazu? Wie schafften es die Fugger so reich zu werden? Im Jahre 1367 zog der junge Hans Fugger und bald sein Bruder Ulin von Graben nach Augsburg, um Bürger dieser Stadt zu werden . Hans Fugger war nicht ganz mittellos und nutzte somit die Gelegenheit als Angehöriger der Weberzunft in erster, sowohl auch in zweiter Ehe eine Tochter eines Zunftmeisters zu heiraten. So mehrte sich das Anfangsvermögen und 1396 war Hans Fugger bereits Zunftmeister und Ratsherr und stand an 41. Stelle der Augsburger Steuerzahler. Nach seinem Tod nahm unter der Leitung der tüchtigen Mutter Elisabeth, geborene Gefattermann, das Vermögen weiter zu. Während sein Sohn Andreas Fugger, auch "Fugger vom Reh genannt" in die Bedeutungslosigkeit zurückfiel, sollte sein Sohn Jakob, auch "der Ältere" oder "Fugger von der Lilie" genannt der Stammvater epochemachender Kaufleute sein. Jakob der Ältere war schon nicht mehr nur Ratsherr und Webermeister, sondern gleichzeitig auch Kaufmann . Er heiratete Barbara Bäsinger, Tochter eines Goldschmieds, Münzmeisters und Silberhändlers und bereits acht Jahre vor seinem Tod zählte Jakob zu den 12 reichsten Augsburgern. 1459 wurde Jakob Fugger geboren. Er war der Nachzügler der Familie und da alle wichtigen Führungspositionen der Fuggerfirma bereits besetzt waren, sollte er Geistlicher werden. Als seine Brüder Hans, Peter und Markus im Jahre 1473 verstarben, hatte er bereits die niederen Weihen im fränkischen Stift Herrfrieden empfangen. Lediglich dem Umstand, dass seine Brüder so früh verstarben, verdankte es Jakob, das Kloster verlassen zu können und Einzug in die Fuggerfirma zu halten. [...]

In a book that radically challenges conventional understandings of the dynamics of cultural imperialism, Shaden M. Tageldin unravels the complex relationship between translation and seduction in the colonial context. She examines the afterlives of two occupations of Egypt—by the French in 1798 and by the British in 1882—in a rich comparative analysis of acts, fictions, and theories that translated the European into the Egyptian, the Arab, or the Muslim. Tageldin finds that the encounter with European Orientalism often invited colonized Egyptians to imagine themselves "equal" to or even "masters" of their colonizers, and thus, paradoxically, to translate themselves toward—virtually into—the European. Moving beyond the domination/resistance binary that continues to govern understandings of colonial history, Tageldin redefines cultural imperialism as a politics of translational seduction, a politics that lures the colonized to seek power through empire rather than against it, thereby repressing its inherent inequalities. She considers, among others, the interplays of Napoleon and Hasan al-'Attar; Rifa'a al-Tahtawi, Silvestre de Sacy, and Joseph Agoub; Cromer, 'Ali Mubarak, Muhammad al-Siba'i, and Thomas Carlyle; Ibrahim 'Abd al-Qadir al-Mazini, Muhammad Husayn Haykal, and Ahmad Hasan al-Zayyat; and Salama Musa, G. Edmund Husserl, generally regarded as the founding figure of phenomenology, exerted an enormous influence on the course of twentieth and twenty-first century philosophy. This volume collects and translates essays written by important German-speaking commentators on Husserl, ranging from his contemporaries to scholars of today, to make available in English some of the best commentary on Husserl and the phenomenological project. The essays focus on three problematics within phenomenology: the nature and method of phenomenology; intentionality, with its attendant issues of temporality and subjectivity; and intersubjectivity and culture. Several essays also deal with Martin Heidegger’s phenomenology, although in a manner that reveals not only Heidegger’s differences with Husserl but also his reliance on and indebtedness to Husserl’s phenomenology. Taken together, the book shows the continuing influence of Husserl’s thought, demonstrating how such subsequent developments as existentialism, hermeneutics, and deconstruction were defined in part by how they assimilated and departed from Husserlian insights. The course of what has come to be called continental philosophy cannot be described without reference to this assimilation and departure, and among the many successor approaches phenomenology remains a viable avenue for contemporary thought. In addition, problems addressed by Husserl—most notably, intentionality, consciousness, the emotions, and ethics—are of central concern in contemporary non-phenomenological philosophy, and many contemporary thinkers have turned to Husserl for guidance. Franz Brentano (1838-1917) is a key figure in the development of Twentieth Century thought. It was his work that set Husserl on to the road of phenomenology and intentionality, that inspired Meinong's theory of the object which influenced Bertrand Russell, and the entire Polish school of philosophy. ^Descriptive Psychology presents a series of lectures given by Brentano in 1887; they were the culmination of his work, and the clearest statement of his mature thought. It was this later period which proved to be so important in the work of his student, Husserl. This is the first English translation of his work. Benito Muller has added a concise introduction which places Brentano within the history of philosophy and psychology, and locates his influence in contemporary thought.
