Bu değişim, dünya toplumlarının geçmiş yaşantılarının aksine çok hızlı ve köklü biçimde gerçekleşmektedir. Bilim bir yandan bu değişim sürecini açıklama çabasını sürdürürken, diğer yandan da değişimin parçası olarak ürettikleriyle yeni açıklama alanları yaratmaktadır. Sosyolojik anlamda, değişimi en zor tanımlayanların değişimin içinde yaşayanlar olduğu bilinci ile önümüzdeki onlu yıllarda net sonuçlarını görmeye başlayacağımız sürecin, yine neden sonuç ilişkisi çerçevesinde kaynaklarından itibaren olası sonuçlarını yorumlamaya çalışırken, kavram kargaşasına düşmemek önemli bir sorumluluktur. 21. yüzyıla yönelik yaklaşım ve yorumlar arttıkça, insanlığın gündemine yerleşen kavramların özelliklerinde de birtakım farklılaşmalar gözlenmektedir. Sosyal bilimlerin en çok kavramlar düzeyinde bu kargaşaların içine düştüğü göz önüne alınırsa, araştırmacıların bu alanda ne kadar dikkatli olması gerektiği sonucu ortaya çıkar. Bilimsel literatür, 21. yüzyıl öncesinde yeni birtakım kavramlarla tanışmıştır. Bilgi Toplumu, Kapitalist Ötesi Toplum, Post-modernizm, Modern Ötesi, Globalleşme (Küreselleşme), Bilişim, Bilgi Teknolojisi, Bilgi Ekonomisi, Enformasyon Toplumu, Homo Technologicus (Teknolojik insan) vb. içinde bulunduğumuz yıllarla açıklanan ve tanım çabası güdülen kavramların sadece bazılarıdır. Literatürler, ortak bir uzlaşı çabasıyla kavramlar üzerinde tartışmalarını halen sürdürmektedirler. Toplumu kendisine araştırma ve inceleme alanı olarak kabul eden Toplumbilim için gerek bu kavramlar ve gerekse dünyanın içinde bulunduğu hızlı değişme sürecinin toplumlar üzerinde yarattığı etki önemli bir araştırma alanıdır.
