The field of Second Language Teacher Education (SLTE) is mainly concerned with the professional preparation of L2 teachers. Dies bedeutet, dass dieser Entwurf für einen Geschichtsunterricht gedacht ist, der zum überwiegend auf Französisch gehalten wird und der sich größtenteils auf französischsprachige Dokumente stützt. Der in dieser Arbeit erstellte Entwurf für eine Unterrichtseinheit ist für einen gymnasialen Leistungskurs gedacht. Das Thema der Résistance und Occupation ist aus folgenden Gründen gewählt worden. Besonders wichtig ist die interkulturelle Komponente dieses Themas, die es besonders für den bilingualen Sachfachunterricht eignet. Schließlich berührt dieses Thema gleichzeitig die Geschichte Deutschlands und Frankreichs. Dementsprechend finden sich auch in ausreichender Zahl Dokumente, die in beiden Sprachen vorliegen. Außerdem ermöglicht dieses Thema eine besonders gute Verzahnung der beiden Unterrichtsfächer Französisch und Geschichte. Wie genau diese Verzahnung ermöglicht werden kann wird in dieser Arbeit noch behandelt werden. Gerade in diesem Bereich bietet sich ein fächerübergreifender Unterricht geradezu an.

Neben einer starken Zunahme der Schulen, an denen bilingual unterrichtet wird und der Formen bilingualen Unterrichts, kam es auch zu einer Erweiterung des bilingualen Fächerkanons. Mit der Reform des Bildungsplans 2004 wurde der bilinguale Unterricht in den Leitgedanken einzelner Fächer erstmals als konkrete Vorgabe verankert. Dennoch beschränkt sich die Auswahl der Fächer, die in der Praxis bilingual unterrichtet werden meist auf ein paar wenige. In dieser Arbeit werden die Entstehung des bilingualen Unterrichts und dessen Ziele skizziert. Es wird aufgezeigt, welche Formen bilingualen Unterrichts praktiziert werden und welche Probleme auftreten können. Anschließend wird im Hauptteil auf den Sport als bilinguales Unterrichtsfach eingegangen. Anhand der bereits erschienenen Werke werden die theoretischen Grundlagen und Hintergründe aufgezeigt und auf Basis einer praktische durchgeführten Unterrichtseinheit erörtert, inwiefern sich das Fach Sport als bilinguales Unterrichtsfach im Allgemeinen und als Einstiegsfach in den bilingualen Unterricht im Speziellen eignet.

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has recently gained great popularity in German schools. Reports of teachers and pupils indicate that in bilingual lessons foreign language learning is perceived to be less artificial and far more motivating than in traditional language teaching. In contrast to conventional language learning CLIL emphasises subject specific contents. Although many teachers are not sure in which way English as predominant medium of instruction should be taught, most of the rather experimental attempts to do so are reported to be successful. Nevertheless, in some German states there neither is a curriculum, nor are there any recommendations specifically developed on the needs of different subjects taught in the integrated way. CLIL requires teachers to be strongly committed and to invest extra time and work to turn this relatively new concept into a success. But what is their motivation for establishing such learning environments? To find out about some of the reasons why CLIL is currently so successful in German schools, I examine the example of political education in Saxony and the extra benefits of CLIL when being taught in English.

Learning foreign languages is a process of acquiring authentic contents in cultural contexts. In this respect, bilingual programs provide an effective connection between content-based studies and linguistic activities. The European umbrella term CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) not only comprises the aims and objectives of a sustainable format of teaching foreign languages but also the priority of content over language, in other words: language follows content, as in the Bauhaus precept form follows function. But in order to effectively integrate content and language, a comprehensive pedagogical approach is needed that goes beyond existing curricula and guidebooks. Bernd Klewitz aims at establishing the CLIL methodology by linking content requirements of subject areas, especially those in the social sciences, with linguistic building blocks and tools. The integrative methodology of bilingual programs extends to the study of literature, traditionally a domain of language tuition, but thought to be a seminal part of CLIL as well. Introduction In this paper, I would like to clarify the importance of bilingual teaching as an innovative and modern development in scholastic education. I would like to do so on using as an example of a lesson I developed on “multiculturalism in Berlin and London” which could be subject matter for a 9th grade political science class in Germany. A requirement for the topic of this paper was to combine the two courses of module 5b ("An Excursion to London," and "Introduction to Bilingual Teaching"), which I attended during summer semester 2009 and winter semester of 2009/ 2010, with my content subject, political science. At the beginning of my work, I would like to define the term "Content and Language Integrated Learning" (CLIL) and thus point out the inconsistency in the usage of this term. Furthermore, I would like to focus on various justifications for bilingual teaching. In this context it is important to examine and illustrate the importance, potential, and future prospects of CLIL. In addition, this work demonstrates the objectives of bilingual teaching. The concept of bilingual teaching is supported by the paradigm of Language Awareness which will be discussed in detail in this paper. Another focus of this work will be to put CLIL into a suitable context within the chosen topic of multiculturalism in the European metropolises of London and Berlin. The broad term “multiculturalism” will be defined in advance in this work in order to avoid misunderstandings. Moreover, I will present some material for bilingual political science that I partly used as a becoming teacher during my internship in a German High School in the city of Kassel. This material mostly consists of empirical data about the ethnic population structure in London and Berlin that should be analyzed and evaluated by the students.
