Dalam perspektif tujuan penciptaan manusia, Tuhan menghendaki agar manusia senantiasa beribadah dan menjadi pembawa rahmat bagi alam semesta serta wakil Tuhan (khalifah) di bumi (Qs. Adz-Dzariyat [51]: 56; Al-Anbiyâ’ [21]:107; Al-Baqarah [2]: 30). Amanah Tuhan yang diberikan kepada manusia untuk mengemban tugas sebagai wakil Tuhan di dunia bukanlah perkara mudah, sebab disisi lain manusia juga dibekali nafsu syahwat yang berpotensi untuk berbuat jahat. Dua potensi tersebut hanya merupakan simbul kemanusiaan manusia sehingga cita-cita untuk dapat mencapai perkembangan secara optimal masih membutuhkan ikhtiar dan bimbingan. Meskipun diakui fitrah manusia merupakan fitrah Tuhan yang menjadikan manusia sebagai wakil Tuhan di bumi (khalifah fil ardh), tetapi fitrah tersebut tidak secara otomatis dapat berfungsi dengan baik. Pada kenyataannya, sering kali manusia lebih dikuasai oleh nafsu syahwat dan beragam kenikmatan diniawi sehingga fitrah kebaikan manusia sering kali tertutup dan tidak dapat melihat kebaikan. Dalam kondisi ini, hampir dipastikan seseorang tidak dapat mencapai perkembangannya secara optimal. Untuk itu, diperlukan layanan bimbingan dan konseling yang dapat mengembalikan manusia kepada jalan Tuhan. Untuk dapat membimbing manusia kepada jalan Tuhan, maka manusia harus dipandang secara hakikat sebagai makhluk Tuhan. Sebab tafsiran terhadap manusia akan berimplikasi pada bagaimana manusia tersebut diperlakukan. Buku Bimbingan dan Konseling berparadigma Profetik ini memandang manusia secara utuh sebagai makhluk yang berdimensi fisik, akal, dan spiritual. Manusia bebas menentukan tingkah lakunya berdasarkan pikiran, perasaan dan kemauannya, tetapi pada saat yang bersamaan manusia juga bertanggung jawab terhadap lingkungan alam, manusia lain, dan Tuhannya. Pada tataran praksis, bimbingan dan konseling profetik mengelaborasi metode sokratik dalam strategi dan teknik layanannya. Metode sokratik memiliki kekuatan untuk membangun kesadaran individu melalui keterampilan berpikir reflektif, sehingga dimungkinkan menemukan “kediriannya” untuk hidup penuh maslahat sebagaimana fitrah kemanusiannya.

When Western influences began to pervade the Muslim world over a century ago, intense and rapid changes occurred in almost every sphere of Muslim life. In spite of its brevity, this book offers the reader a fascinating study of how one of the century’s most important Muslim thinkers dealt with the ideas and institutions of the West. While Rida’s intellectual odyssey ran from guarded admiration of the West to contempt for its hypocrisy and even to calls for open rebellion, what is important to note is that his foremost concern was with values and ideas, in the tradition of the hadith which states that wisdom is like the believer’s lost camel, it is his to mount regardless of where he may find it. Thus, while Rida could hardly have endorsed the colonial policies of a Bismarck, for example, he nonetheless admired the man’s thinking in regard to education. Through the efforts of Muhammad Rashid Rida an entire generation of Muslim intellectuals was brought face to face with the thought of several of the West’s most important writers and social philosophers. Finally, though the inhumanity of the battlefield may have convinced Rida that Western politics were about the cynical exercise of power, the humanity of the West’s thinkers remained the standard by which he judged the West in general.
