Deutung und Kritik der modernen Wirtschaft anhand von Goethes 'Faust'" versucht sich Hans Christoph Binswanger an einer Interpretation des zweiten Teiles des Faust, die sich betont von der idealistischen Goetheauslegung distanziert und das Drama als eine Allegorie der modernen Wirtschaft liest. Ausgehend von einer Analyse des alchemistischen Prozedere untersucht Binswanger, wie im Verlauf des Dramas Elemente der Alchemie motivisch wiederkehren und Goethes Sichtweise der modernen Wirtschaft bestimmen; im zweiten Teil (Binswanger 92 - 146) steht das Verhältnis von Wirtschaft und Zeit bzw. die Verbindung von Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Kunst mit der Überwindung der Vergänglichkeit im Vordergrund. Der dritte Teil setzt sich schließlich mit Goethes Verhältnis zur Ökonomie und dessen ökonomischer Kompetenz auseinander und zieht sie als Beleg für die dezidiert ökonomisch-gesellschaftliche Interpretation heran. Das Anliegen ist eine Analyse der modernen Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft, insbesondere in ihrem Verhältnis zum Geld, vor dem Hintergrund einer Faust-Interpretation. Als Nicht-Philologe und Volkswissenschaftler betrachtet Binswanger das Drama dabei unter einem anderen Blickwinkel. Gleich zu Anfang seiner Darlegungen stellt Binswanger die These auf, im Mittelpunkt von Goethes Faust stehe die Faszination der Wirtschaft, die als alchemistischer Prozeß oder als "Suche nach den künstlichen Gold" erklärt wird (Binswanger 9). Auch der historische Faust sei, wie der fiktive, ein Alchemist, ein "Schwarzkünstler" gewesen, der sich in fürstliche Dienste begab, um künstliches Gold herzustellen. Der Begriff der Alchemie und sie selbst als Wissenschaft stammten wahrscheinlich aus Ägypten; etymologisch habe sich das Wort aus "Kem" oder "Chem" entwickelt, also der Bezeichnung für "schwarze Erde Ägyptens"; "schwarz" habe möglicherweise als Metapher für das Geheimnisvolle und Mysteriöse dieser Kunst gedient (Binswanger 11). Zentrales Mittel bei der Herstellung künstlichen Goldes sei dabei der "Stein der Weisen" als wesentlicher Katalysator des chemischen Prozesses, bei dem ein unedles Metall wie Blei (als Symbol der Vergänglichkeit) in Gold, das Symbol des Dauerhaften und Unvergänglichen, umgewandelt wird. Dieser Bezug der Alchemie zur Zeit bzw. zum Ausbruch des Menschen aus der Vergänglichkeit ist zugleich der Anlaß für Binswangers Analyse des Verhältnisses der Wirtschaft und der modernen Gesellschaft zur Zeit. Project Society After Money is an interdisciplinary project between commons theory, evolutionary political economy, media studies and sociology, that enter into a dialogue with one another in order to look at their specific theories and criticisms of money. Conceived as the beginning of a necessary interdisciplinary dialogue, the possibilities of post-monetary forms of organization and production are taken into account and examined. On one hand there is a lot of talk about 'digital revolution', 'mediatized society', 'networks', 'Industry 4.0'. On the other hand the present is described in terms of crisis: 'financial crisis', 'economic crisis', 'planetary boundaries'. At once there is the description of a media-technological change along with massive social and ecological disruptions. Society After Money is based on the premise that there might be a conflict between digital media/digital technology and the medium of money – and perhaps new digital possibilities that allow alternative forms of economy. It criticizes what is normally seen as self-evident and natural, namely that social coordination has to be done by the medium of money. Money is a legal institution with principal economic and sociological consequences. Money is a debt, because that is how it is conceptualised and comes into existence: as circulating credit – if viewed from the creditor’s perspective – or, from the debtor’s viewpoint, as debt. This book presents a legal theory of money, based on the concept of dematerialised property. It describes the money creation or money supply process for cash and for bank money, and looks at modern forms of money, such as cryptocurrencies. It also shows why mainstream economics presupposes, but avoids an analysis of, money by effectively eliminating money from the microeconomic market model and declaring it as merely a neutral medium of exchange and unit of account. The book explains that money rather brings about and influences substantially the exchange or transaction it is supposed to facilitate only as a neutral medium. As the most liquid of all assets, money enables financialisation, monetisation and commodification in the economy. The central role of the banks in the money creation process and in the economy, and their strengthened position after the bank rescue measures in the wake of the financial crisis 2008-9 are also discussed.
