Miranduolo scavato dal 2001 al 2016 in diciassette campagne di indagine, per la dimensione raggiunta e l’effettivo ottimo stato dei depositi, si propone come un contesto a cui guardare e relazionarsi per verificare e falsificare i quadri storici ipotizzati nella più ampia dimensione, spesso basati su scavi di ridotta metratura. Il 2017 e il 2019 sono poi stati dedicati a produrre documentazione di dettaglio e rilevare a tappeto tutte le murature presenti, oltre che alla redazione del progetto scientifico per la realizzazione di un parco. I dati quantitativi rivelano il grande impegno degli archeologi e lo sforzo in conoscenza fatto. L’area occupata dal castello è pari a 4.290,72 m², mentre lo spazio indagato interno alle sue mura ammonta a 4.096,97 m² con percentuale pari al 95,48%. Inoltre si sono affrontate le superfici esterne per un’estensione di 1.028,32 m². Nell’insieme, dunque, lo scavo archeologico ha interessato 5.125,29 m². Le dimensioni assunte rendono il caso eccezionale; la messa in luce pressoché totale del castello e l’indagine, seppur parziale, degli spazi fuori dal circuito difensivo hanno permesso di costruire un modello paradigmatico di formazione ed evoluzione dell’insediamento rurale toscano fra VII secolo e XIV secolo, andando ben oltre i dati forniti dalle fonti d’archivio che, invece, documentavano l’esistenza di un castello a Miranduolo, compreso nel patrimonio dei conti Gherardeschi, dall’anno 1004.

The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and will be concluded in October 2020. The University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume brings together the research presented at the first nEUMed workshop, held in Siena on 11-12 April, 2017. The aim of the workshop was to draw up an initial survey of research and related work on the project, one and a half years after its inception. The project is composed of several research units. Each unit covers an aspect of the interdisciplinary research underpinning the nEU-Med project, each with their own methodology. For this first volume of results, it was decided not to give an account of all the work carried out within all the units, but to select those lines of investigation which, at the end of the first year and a half, have made it possible to articulate and develop an interdisciplinary research strategy.

Malaria and Rome is the first comprehensive study of malaria in ancient Italy since the research of the distinguished Italian malariologist Angelo Celli in the early twentieth century. It demonstrates the importance of disease patterns and history in understanding the demography of ancient populations. Robert Sallares argues that malaria became increasingly prevalent in Roman times in central Italy as a result of ecological change and alterations to the physical landscape such as deforestation.
