Biochemical Actions of Hormones, Volume II is a 12-chapter text that surveys the significant developments toward understanding the primary effects of hormones in cellular receptors at the molecular level. This book starts with an overview of the genetic regulation by hormones and the role of cyclic adenosine monophosphate in hormonal response. These topics are followed by discussions on the hormone-dependent molecular mechanisms, which appear to participate in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation in this model system, as well as how multiple hormonal signals may serve to integrate a large number of complex regulatory mechanisms. A chapter deals with the comparative aspects of the physiology and biochemistry of insulin, with an emphasis on the molecular mode of action of insulin on metabolic processes. The remaining chapters deal with the physiology, mechanism of action, and biological effects of various hormones, including catecholamines, glucocorticoids, estrogens, progestins, gonadotropins, prolactin, adrenocorticotropic hormone, 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, and insect hormones. Endocrinologists will find this book invaluable.

Biochemical Actions of Hormones, Volume VII is a nine-chapter text that covers a broad range of subjects representing research efforts on hormone action. This book deals first with the developments on hormones of the thymus and the evidence on the regulation of liver steroid and drug metabolism by the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary. These topics are followed by discussions on the regulation by neurotransmitters in the hypothalamus of LHRH and somatostatin; the hormonal regulation of protein degradation in liver and in isolated cells; and the hormonal regulation of lipid mobilization from adipose tissue. Considerable chapters are devoted to steroid hormone mechanisms and the cell genetics of glucocorticoid responsiveness. The remaining chapters explore the mero-receptor and androgenic regulation in male accessory tissue. These chapters also highlight the molecular biological aspects of thyroid hormone action. This volume is an ideal source for biologists, biochemists, and researchers working in the subject and in related fields.

Biochemical Actions of Hormones, Volume XII is a compendium of papers discussing aspects of molecular biology with regard to hormone action and to certain hormone receptors. One paper discusses the different approaches and strategies that are used in determining the amino acid sequence. The paper also describes the structural organization of polyprotein precursors such as the peptide chemistry approach or the nucleic acid approach. Another paper investigates the regulation of prolactin biosynthesis by peptide hormones as a model for peptidergic regulation of gene expression. The paper defines in detail which components of the biosynthetic machinery are being regulated by the polypeptide hormones. One paper also analyzes the molecular biology of the metallothioneins, focusing on the glucocorticoid regulation of metallothioneins genes. Experiments show that when the mouse MT-I gene is activated in lymphoid cells, or transferred to other cells, it still retains information needed in metal-regulated expression, though glucocorticoids can no longer regulate the same gene. Other papers discuss the purification and properties of the nerve growth factor receptor, and the thyrotropin receptor. Micro-biologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, cellular biologists, endocrinologists, and scientists involved in cell research will find this collection valuable.

Receptors and Gene Expression It is now more than three years since the last Meadow Brook Conference on Hormones, and a great deal has happened in the meantime. We have become comfortable with the totally unanticipated fact that the coding sequences of genes are in discontinuous arrangements and that the RNA transcribed from them must be extensively processed to form messenger RNA. We have also learned about the strategy of "mixing and matching" of genetic segments so that a small amount of DNA can go a long way in producing a huge variety of different proteins, as in the immunoglobulin system. The explosive effort directed toward DNA sequence analysis has led us to the conclusion that there are signals within the DNA that specify sites of transcription initiation and possibly sites for interacting with regulatory molecules such as hor mones and their receptors. The current intense interest in the structure of chromatin beyond the nucleosome-that is, the superstructural characteris tics of the genetic material-is finally yielding meaningful results that give promise for understanding the regulation of gene activity. ROBERT F. GOLDBERGER Preface Research on the molecular mechanism of steroid hormone action continues at an extraordinary pace and a great deal of progress has been made. Steroid hormones have been localized on target genes providing the long awaited evidence for the concept of a direct effect of the steroid-receptor complex on gene regulation. Purified steroid receptors have been dissected to identify different functional domains.

Introduction to Modern Biochemistry, Fourth Edition provides a better understanding of the chemical background of biological phenomena. The book presents an introduction and a survey of the facts and concepts of biochemistry. The text is intended to be an instructional material. Topics of general importance, such as the generation and utilization of free energy, the role of genes in protein and enzyme synthesis, and the importance of the submicroscopic structure of the cell in biochemical reactions, are emphasized. No distinction between descriptive biochemistry and dynamic biochemistry are made, for the sake of simplicity and better comprehension of concepts presented in the book. Students, biochemists, biologists, pharmacists, and medical practitioners will find this book as a good reference.

Chemical Endocrinology deals with the chemical nature of naturally occurring hormones, their chemical structures, and their biological activities. Hormones discussed in this text include thyroid and parathyroid hormones, adrenal hormones, gonadal hormones, pancreatic hormones, pituitary hormones, hypothalamic-releasing hormones, and gastrointestinal hormones. Comprised of 15 chapters, this book opens with a brief description of the biological functions of the products of the endocrine glands, followed by a discussion on the use of bioassays to measure hormone concentration. Various types of bioassays for adrenocorticotropin are considered, along with hormone assay by specific ligand binding. The biochemistry of relaxin, calcitonin, hormones of the adrenal medulla, steroid hormones, hormones of the anterior pituitary, melanocyte-stimulating hormones, and other hormones is then described. The final chapter is devoted to erythropoietin, its occurrence, isolation and chemical properties. This monograph will be of interest to biochemists, endocrinologists, biologists, and physiologists, as well as to students and investigators in other fields.
