In an age when advanced molecular and genetic tools allow studies in various systems, amphibian metamorphosis still offers perhaps the most accessible model for the study of postembryonic organogenesis and mechanisms of hormonal regulation during vertebrate development. Amphibian Metamorphosis: From Morphology to Molecular Biology integrates findings from the most recent research with earlier observations, providing molecular and mechanistic insights into the signal transduction pathways underlying tissue-specific transformations during metamorphosis. The author, renowned expert of anuran metamorphosis and Head of the Unit of Molecular Morphogenesis at NICHD/NIH, begins with an overview of metamorphosis in different classes of amphibians and various factors that influence this process. A review of earlier morphological, cellular, and biochemical changes focuses on organs and tissues that have been studied extensively at the molecular level, while discussion of the thyroid hormone signal transduction pathway emphasizes transcriptional regulation mechanisms by thyroid receptors. The book provides a summary and comparison of gene regulation programs induced by thyroid hormone in several organs that undergo distinct metamorphic transformations. Several chapters are devoted to functional and mechanistic implications of the molecular findings on the thyroid hormone response genes in tissue transformation. Special features of this book include: * An emphasis on integrating the morphological approach with molecularand cell biology * A historical perspective on the progression from discovery of the thyroid hormone to present-day research advances * Comparisons of amphibian and insect metamorphosis * Dozens of instructive photographs, several in full color Amphibian Metamorphosis: From Morphology to Molecular Biology is a unique and invaluable resource for professionals and aspiring professionals in develop-mental biology, molecular biology, cell biology, evolutionary biology, and endocrinology.

Volume 5 of Advances in Developmental Biology and Biochemistry consists of seven chapters that review specific aspects of development in several different organisms, including sea urchins, flies, worms, frogs, and mice. In Chapter 1, Wassarman and Therrier provide a detailed analysis of RAS1-mediated photoreceptor development in Drosophila as determined by genetic and biochemical approaches. Much of the information in this area has come from studies of the role of RAS1 in the Sevenless (SEV) signal transduction pathway that specifies the R7 photoreceptor cell fate. In Chapter 2, Westlund, Berry, and Schedl describe the regulation of germline proliferation in the nematode, C. elegans. In large part, the authors discuss components of signaling pathways, including glp-1 and other members of the Notch protein family that are crucial for a germ cell's decision of whether to remain mitotic or to enter meiotic prophase. In Chapter 3, Richards details the current status of the ecdysone regulatory cascade in Drosophila. In a comprehensive presentation, he describes ecdysone-regulated chromosomal puffs, their corresponding genes, and the receptors and transcription factors involved in the ecdysone regulatory cascade. In Chapter 4, Tam, Quinlan, and Trainor describe the patterning of progenitor tissues for the cranial region of the mouse embryo during gastrulation and early organogenesis. In particular, the authors review the sequence of developmental processes that delineate major tissue domains and the finer segmental organization of the progenitor tissues for the formation of craniofacial structures. In Chapter 5, Bodmer and his colleagues detail the genetic basis of heart development in Drosophila. Here, the authors discuss various gene functions that are required for the initial specification and later differentiation of the heart and compare molecular mechanisms that lead to heart formation in Drosophila with those that may be involved in heart formation in vertebrates. In Chapter 6, Tata Discusses hormonal signaling and amphibian metamorphosis. Following a review of amphibian metamorphosis, the author describes thyroid hormone receptors, the genes encoding them, and their target genes, as well as how their activities are coordinated by signaling molecules. Finally, in Chapter 7, Kaldis and colleagues discuss the functions of creatine kinase (CK) isozymes in spermatozoa from a variety of mammalian and nonmammalian species.

This book came about as a result of a review I had written earlier on fea tures of cellular changes occurring during anuran metamorphosis. Only a limited treatment of this subject was possible in such a circumscribed work and only specific examples of organic change were dealt with. Thus the sins of omission weighed heavily, for so much information could not be included to provide a more comprehensive and authenticated account of the elaborate, complex, and far-reaching changes that an aquatic larva undergoes to become a terrestrial froglet. A good deal of my working life has been spent investigating amphib ians, especially their larval developmental morphology during metamor phosis, first at the level of light microscopy and in later years by electronmicroscopy. Initially I was particularly concerned with morpho logical homologies of a variety of larval structures, such as the cranial and pharyngeal skeleton and the nerves and musculature, in order to learn more about amphibian phylogeny, for during my pre-and early postgrad uate years G. R. Beer and D. M. S. Watson inspired an undying interest in and respect for vertebrate comparative anatomy. However, it now seems to be that amphibian phylogenetic relationships are best dealt with by the paleontologists, so ably demonstrated by D. M. S. Watson and A. S. Romer and the contemporary enthusiasts in this field like A. L. Panchen, R. L. Carroll, E. Jarvik, and K. S. Thompson among a host of others, particularly in the USA.

Advances in morphogenesis, Volume 7 considers the significant advances in various aspects of morphogenesis. This volume is composed of eight chapters that specifically cover the concept of blastogenesis and tissue regeneration. The introductory chapter presents the evidence suggesting that the mechanism involved in the initiation of growth in compensatory hypertrophy may not be the same as that in wound healing. The succeeding two chapters deal with certain morphogenetic aspects of the crown gall problem and the development of the innervation of the tetrapod limb by combined observations of behavior with histological studies. These topics are followed by discussions on the synthesis of mRNA during embryonic development, aspects of blastogenesis, and phases of amphibian limb regeneration. The concluding chapters examine the main features of the induction of the development of kidney tubules in the metanephrogenic mesenchyme and the utilization of the developing Fucus egg as a prototype of the localization phenomenon. This book is directed primarily toward developmental biologists.
