Polymers from natural sources are particularly useful as biomaterials and in regenerative medicine, given their similarity to the extracellular matrix and other polymers in the human body. This important book reviews the wealth of research on both tried and promising new natural-based biomedical polymers, together with their applications as implantable biomaterials, controlled-release carriers or scaffolds for tissue engineering. The first part of the book reviews the sources, processing and properties of natural-based polymers for biomedical applications. Part two describes how the surfaces of polymer-based biomaterials can be modified to improve their functionality. The third part of the book discusses the use of natural-based polymers for biodegradable scaffolds and hydrogels in tissue engineering. Building on this foundation, Part four looks at the particular use of natural-gelling polymers for encapsulation, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The penultimate group of chapters reviews the use of natural-based polymers as delivery systems for drugs, hormones, enzymes and growth factors. The final part of the book summarises research on the key issue of biocompatibility.Natural-based polymers for biomedical applications is a standard reference for biomedical engineers, those studying and researching in this important area, and the medical community. - Examines the sources, processing and properties of natural based polymers for biomedical applications - Explains how the surfaces of polymer based biomaterials can be modified to improve their functionality - Discusses the use of natural based polymers for hydrogels in tissue engineering, and in particular natural gelling polymers for encapsulation and regenerative medicine

Biodegradable polymers are an important class of polymers due to their good biodegradability and biocompatibility. The research and application of biodegradable polymers in biomedical fields have attracted extensive attention, especially in that of drug delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Biodegradable polymers can be broken down in vivo through enzymatic and non-enzymatic degradation. For biomedical applications, the chemical and mechanical properties, degradation mechanism and products, and other factors of the polymers play a critical role in their degradation behaviors and application. Thus, many essential issues must be considered in the design of biodegradable polymers for biomedical application. For instance, sufficient mechanical strength is important for scaffold materials to provide three-dimensional space for cells, and its degradation rate must be compatible with tissue regeneration. When used as the drug carriers for some implants, controllable degradation rate is also required for the biodegradable polymers to avoid explosive release, besides good permeability. More importantly, the biodegradable polymers must have good biocompatibility to avoid adverse reactions such as inflammation in the body, and the degradation products must be non-toxic and should not be accumulated in the body. To meet such requirements, the chemical and physical as well as the degradation properties of polymers must be properly tailored.

Shape Memory Polymers For Biomedical Applications written by L Yahia and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-19 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are an emerging class of smart polymers which give scientists the ability to process the material into a permanent state and predefine a second temporary state which can be triggered by different stimuli. The changing chemistries of SMPs allows scientists to tailor important properties such as strength, stiffness, elasticity and expansion rate. Consequently SMPs are being increasingly used and developed for minimally invasive applications where the material can expand and develop post insertion. This book will provide readers with a comprehensive review of shape memory polymer technologies. Part 1 will discuss the fundamentals and mechanical aspects of SMPs. Chapters in part 2 will look at the range of technologies and materials available for scientific manipulation whilst the final set of chapters will review applications. - Reviews the fundamentals of shape memory polymers with chapters focussing on the basic principles of the materials - Comprehensive coverage of design and mechanical aspects of SMPs - Expert analysis of the range of technologies and materials available for scientific manipulation
