Handbook of Material Biodegradation, Biodeterioration, and Biostabilization, Second Edition gives extensive information on the microorganisms involved in the biodegradation of materials, along with the biocides which are permitted for use according to the most up-to-date worldwide legislation. Mechanisms of biodegradation and biodeterioration, results of biodeterioration, and methods of biostabilization are covered for a large number of products, making the title relevant for a range of industries and applications, including construction, coatings/paints, medical and pharmaceutical applications, and electronics. In addition, the health and safety aspects of biocide application are covered in detail, as well as the personal protection of practitioners who are required to use them. The contents and the most-up-to-date information make this book essential for almost all the fields of applied chemistry. Enables practitioners to identify the organisms responsible for biodeterioration in materials, select suitable preventative measures, and safely deploy methods of biostabilization Contains information on the biostabilization of various industrial products, including 24 groups of polymers Includes critical (and current) health and safety, environmental, and regulatory guidelines and best practices, and their relationships to legislation, regulation, toxicity, micro-organisms, biocides, and polymers Essential reading for scientists and practitioners as new regulations eliminate the use of previously used materials Contains up-to-date information on legislation and regulations governing the use of biocides in the European Union, the United States, and worldwide

Handbook Of Functionalized Nanostructured Mxenes written by Komal Rizwan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-01 with Science categories.

This book covers the various aspects of MXenes nanomaterials and its composites from the fabrication to the potential applications in energy devices, sensors, and environmental remediation. MXenes are two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides which contains novel combination of properties including great conductivity and mechanical, thermal features of transition metal carbide and nitrides. In addition, MXenes nanomaterials possess high surface area, novel morphology, and layered structure and the functionalized of its surfaces gives it excellent hydrophilic characteristics and high absorption of electromagnetic radiations making them versatile materials for various applications. The beginning part of the book gives an in-depth literature covering the fundamental principles, fabrication, self-assembling strategies of nano-engineered MXenes, and their composites materials. The later chapters describe the chemical functionalization of MXenes nanomaterials for diversified applications such as electromagnetic shielding, energy storage devices (super capacitors, lithium ion batteries, CO2 capture, optical switching, transistors), photo catalysis, drug delivery, implants, tissue engineering, water purification, and sensing applications. It demonstrates that MXene-based advanced architectures promote continuous innovations and provide driving force in different fields particularly in environmental remediation and energy storage devices. This book is essential reading for all chemists, biologists, physicists, and environmental scientists working in the field of nanotechnology, energy, and environmental chemistry. It helps academics and professionals to polish their knowledge with the latest described data. It also helps professionals in developing innovative technologies by keeping in mind the applications of functionalized nanostructured MXenes.

The present volume contains the majority of the papers presented at the Second Pan-American Biodeterioration Society Meeting held at The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., USA, on July 28, 29, 30, and 31, 1988. The sponsors for this symposium included The George Washington University, The Smithsonian Institution, The Virginia Department of Health, The University of Connecticut, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Atlanta University, Ball State University, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, the Agriculture Research Service/U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the University of Georgia. The program was organized by members of the Program and Planning Committee. They invited leading scientists in specific topic areas and accepted contributed papers from individuals and laboratories actively involved in relevant areas of research and study. The participation of established scientists was encouraged. The Society (PABS) undertook to ensure that the program reflected current developments, informed reviews, embryonic and developing areas, and critical assessment for several aspects of the present state of knowledge as it relates to the major sections of the proceedings. Obviously, not all aspects of biodeterioration or biodegradation are represented.

Two major problems encountered as we approach a new century are the availability of resources for chemicals and energy, and environmental pollution. This book highlights the importance of biotransformation as a solution to these problems and considers traditionally separate areas as one interdependent discipline, in terms of the underlying mechanistic biochemistry and the research techniques employed. The provision of resources has largely centred around non-renewable materials, especially oil. Diminishing reserves of these, together with uncertainties of supply and cost have stimulated great interest in renewable resources. These are largely lignocellulosic materials (e.g. wood and straw) which are available through natural biomass turnover, farming and forestry and from wastes generated by industrial processes. An excellent example is that of kraft lignin, a by-product of pulp and paper production, amounting to 60 million tonnes per annum and which is largely wasted by burning or landfilling. This aromatic polymer has enormous potential as a feedstock to the chemical industry. Environmental pollution is no longer accepted as inevitable for a technological society. Over the past decade there has been a tremendous increase in awareness of the effects of pollution and public pressure has influenced both industry and government. However, to be realistic, it is not possible to replace all processes generating polluting wastes with clean alternatives. Instead, treatments of pollution, both at source and after an incident, are alternatives in many instances and a great deal of emphasis is currently being placed on these.
