Small island developing states (SIDS) are renowned for the rich biodiversity of their marine and terrestrial ecosystems. However, it is also well known that because of their isolation, fragility, and extreme vulnerability to environmental deterioration, their biodiversity is among the most threatened in the world. Identifying and monitoring all the components of biological diversity is a formidable task. This publication therefore proposes to identify those components of biodiversity that are a resource for humanity, primarily focusing upon the biological resources used by people, whether they are floral and faunal species and their genetic variations, or whole ecosystems. It outlines systems for rapid assessment to monitor the status of crucial resources that are in current use or have potential for future use so that those under threat of depletion can be quickly identified. This will in turn facilitate taking informed policy decisions for biodiversity conservation strategies, generate public awareness of important biodiversity issues and build regional and local scientific capacity in this field.

The 2012 UNEP Foresight Process on Emerging Global Environmental Issues primarily identified emerging environmental issues and possible solutions on a global scale and perspective. In 2013, UNEP carried out a similar exercise to identify priority emerging environmental issues that are of concern to the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The social and economic emerging issues were also identified using the same set of criteria. At the core of the process was a SIDS Foresight Panel consisting of 11 SIDS experts (for the UNEP Panel) and 12 experts (for the UN DESA Panel) from the three SIDS regions, representing the global SIDS community and a wide range of disciplines. The process was designed to open the discussion on emerging environmental issues to a broad range of views both from the Foresight Panel and a wider community of relevant experts from across the globe. Through the Foresight Process, separate lists of 20 environmental and 15 socioeconomic emerging issues were identified and discussed in this report.

While most of the current literature on the subject deals with specific regions, this book analyses the impacts of climate change across the Caribbean, the Pacific Ocean, and the African and Indian Ocean regions in order to identify and tackle the real issues faced by all the small island States. As the global effects of climate change become increasingly evident and urgent, it is clear that the impact on small islands is going to be particularly severe. These island countries are especially vulnerable to rising sea levels, hurricanes and cyclones, frequent droughts, and the disruption of agriculture, fisheries and vital ecosystems. On many small islands, the migration of vulnerable communities to higher ground has already begun. Food security is an increasingly pressing issue. Hundreds of thousands of islanders are at risk. Marine ecosystems are threatened by acidification and higher seawater temperatures leading to increased pressure on fisheries—still an important source of food for many island communities. The small island developing States emit only small amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Yet many SIDS governments are allocating scarce financial and human resources in an effort to further reduce their emissions. This is a mistake. Rather than focus on mitigation (i.e., the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) Climate Change Adaptation in Small Island Developing States concentrates on adaptation. The author assesses the immediate and future impacts of climate change on small islands, and identifies a range of proven, cost-effective adaptation strategies. This edited volume addresses the impacts of climate change on Pacific islands, and presents databases and indexes for assessing and adapting to island vulnerabilities.
