Biodiversity Institutes for Conservation and Education (BICE) is a concept for a non-profit business solution addressing today’s pressing environmental problems such as biodiversity loss, ecosystem/habitat degradation, climate change, and related issues. The concept of BICE is to directly involve communities, of all sizes, in the responsible stewardship of endangered and threatened species, subspecies, and distinct population segments. This is accomplished through a community’s adoption of one of BICE’s many pre-planned taxonomic institutes; large, medium, and small. BICE designs, plans, and develops zoological facilities called “institutes” accommodating particular taxonomic groups, as well as designs and develops larger “full-fledged” biodiverse zoos, aquariums, and natural history museums. Every citizen and every community can be actively involved in a well-orchestrated, well-designed system of species conservation, and enjoy the holistic benefits of reconnecting with nature. BICE’s mission statement is as follows; “Our Mission at BICE is to promote and integrate research, outreach, and education while conserving the world’s biodiversity and natural resources, with emphasis on the most imperiled, through captive breeding and applied conservation.”

Monitoring Biodiversity written by Alfonso Alonso and has been published by Smithsonian Institution this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-01 with Science categories.

The book compiles case studies regarding the biodiversity research and monitoring program of Andean species and habitats carefully chosen as indicators to assess the short- and long-term effects of a linear disturbance: the PERU LNG pipeline. Set in a scientifically unexplored region of the Andes, Monitoring Biodiversity clearly articulates the Smithsonian-led conceptual framework for the implementation in the field by scientists. It addresses scientific and conservation questions addressed by the research protocols, the experimental design, and data gathering. Moreover, the book covers a gap on how to integrate biodiversity research, monitoring, and conservation into sustainable development projects of national and international interest. The text is presented in both English and Spanish.

Biological collections are a critical part of the nation's science and innovation infrastructure and a fundamental resource for understanding the natural world. Biological collections underpin basic science discoveries as well as deepen our understanding of many challenges such as global change, biodiversity loss, sustainable food production, ecosystem conservation, and improving human health and security. They are important resources for education, both in formal training for the science and technology workforce, and in informal learning through schools, citizen science programs, and adult learning. However, the sustainability of biological collections is under threat. Without enhanced strategic leadership and investments in their infrastructure and growth many biological collections could be lost. Biological Collections: Ensuring Critical Research and Education for the 21st Century recommends approaches for biological collections to develop long-term financial sustainability, advance digitization, recruit and support a diverse workforce, and upgrade and maintain a robust physical infrastructure in order to continue serving science and society. The aim of the report is to stimulate a national discussion regarding the goals and strategies needed to ensure that U.S. biological collections not only thrive but continue to grow throughout the 21st century and beyond.

It discusses a range of target groups, from children to adults; formal and informal strategies; and various promoting players, such as groups/institutions. Researchers representing Brazilian academic institutions and NGOs share their environmental education (EE) experiences in Brazil and describe the main concerns regarding the marine and coastal environments as well as how they are addressing these concerns in their EE projects. This book is of interest to anyone who is looking for ways of designing and implementing EE activities with a robust theoretical background in different socio-cultural scenarios.
