Indonesia possesses the second largest primate population in the world, with over 33 different primate species. Although Brazil possesses more primate species, Indonesia outranks it in terms of its diversity of primates, ranging from prosimians (slow lorises and tarsiers), to a multitude of Old World Monkey species (macaques, langurs, proboscis moneys) to lesser apes (siamangs, gibbons) and great apes (orangutans). The primates of Indonesia are distributed throughout the archipelago. Partly in response to the number of primates distributed throughout the Indonesian archipelago, Indonesia is classified as the home of two biodiversity hotspots (Wallacea and Sundaland). In order to be classified as a hotspot, an area must have a large proportion of endemic species coupled with a high degree of threat including having lost more than 70% of its original habitat. Two areas within Indonesia meet these criteria. The tremendous diversity of primates in Indonesia, in conjunction with the conservation issues facing the primates of this region, created a need for this volume.

Pengakuan dunia terhadap kekayaan Keanekaragaman Hayati (KEHATI) Pulau Kalimantan, Indonesia, tetah ditunjukkan sejak ratusan tahun oteh banyak ilmuan. Sumber Daya Alam (SDA). Kalimantan tidak hanya kaya KEHATI dan ekosistemnya tetapi juga berbagai jenis tambang, terutama tambang batu bara, minyak bumi dan gas alam. Sumber Daya Atam ini harus dikelola secara efisien dan ramah Lingkungan. Proses pemindahan Ibu Kota Negara dari Jakarta (Jawa centris) menuju Kalimantan tepatnya di Kalimantan Timur (Indonesia centris) telah ditetapkan datam Undang-Undang Nomor 3 Tahun 2022 tentang Ibu Kota Negara (IKN), yang ditandai dimulainya tahap persiapan, pembangunan dan pemindahan IKN. IKN direncanakan untuk dilaksanakan secara bertahap sampai dengan tahun 2045. Lokasi IKN yang dipilih akan memberikan kesempatan luas bagi daerah di Luar Jawa untuk berkembang dan berkontribusi pada pemerataan pembangunan nasional, serta mengurangi beban Jakarta sebagai salah satu pusat utama kegiatan ekonomi nasional. Pemindahan IKN merupakan tantangan besar bagi pemerintah dan pemangku kepentingannya sehingga memertukan persiapan yang matang dan komprehensif. Pembukaan dan pengembangan wilayah dengan kekayaan KEHATI yang tinggi tentunya memerlukan pendekatan pembangunan berketanjutan yang ramah Lingkungan, dengan standar baru yang lebih berkuatitas, inovatif, dan inklusif. IKN dibangun dengan visi "Kota dunia untuk semua" yang berarti tidak hanya untuk manusia, tetapi juga untuk seluruh alam seisinya, dengan misi menciptakan ibu kota yang berkelanjutan dengan memadu kan konsep forest city, smart city dan sponge city atau water conservatory city. Pencapaian visi dan misi pembangunan IKN tersebut memerlukan keterlibatan dan kontribusi nyata dari banyak pihak termasuk dari pakar Biologi. Kontribusi Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Teknologi (IPTEK) Biologi dalam pembangunan IKN berkelanjutan terutama dalam penataan hubungan manusia dan lingkungan yang harmonis sehingga menjamin kebertanjutan kualitas hidup masyarakat di dalam keanekaragaman hayati yang testari. Sebagai bidang sains, biotogi mengajarkan dan membantu manusia mamahami tata cara hidup di bumi dan bagaimana setiap spesies (termasuk manusia) berfungsi, berevoiusi, beradaptasi dan berinteraksi. Kemajuan dalam bidang biotogi dan bioteknotogi juga terbukti membawa peningkatan kualitas hidup manusia. Upaya pemanfaatan IPTEK biologi dapat diterapkan melalui konsep hidup selaras dengan KEHATI dan jasa ekosistem di alam. Strategi dan konsep ini menawarkan solusi yang dapat memberikan kontribusi secara tangsung yaitu untuk mencegah atau meminimatkan konsekuensi bahaya bencana lingkungan dan kontribusi tidak langsung dengan memfasilitasi pengembangan dan pemeliharaan kapasitas beradaptasi yang berkelanjutan di IKN sesuai dengan kearifan lokat.Sebagai Langkah strategis tersebut juga dipertukan pemanfaatan bioteknoLogi untuk pertanian hijau atau greea agriculture (perkebunan, perikanan dan peternakan) dan kebun atap (verttical gorden), penanaman tumbuhan hutan alam, dan pembangunan kawasan pelestarian termasuk kebun raya baru di IKN. Buku ini disusun sebagai rumusan yang mengakomodasi rekomendasi pemi kiran dan arahan dari Dewan Guru Besar UGM, Alumni UGM, ahli lingkungan untuk mengimplementasikan strategi rencana aksi KEHATI serta untuk memandu penerapan konsep IPTEK biologi di IKN. Implementasi konsep-konsep yang diuraikan di datam buku ini akan dituangkan dalam rencana strategi dan aksi pemanfaatan IPTEK Biologi yang krusial untuk mencapai kehidupan berkelanjutan di Ibu Kota Negara. Harapannya, pendekatan sistemik dan strategik datam pembangunan IKN dari para ahli Biologi mampu memberikan transformasi kehidupan selaras dengan alam dan valuasi serta konsep konservasi KEHATI untuk mengawat proses pembangunan IKN yang berkelanjutan dan memastikan tercapainya visi serta misi Ibu Kota Negara.

This book presents a technical review of ecological and life history information on a range of Bornean wildlife species, aimed at identifying what makes these species sensitive to timber harvesting practices and associated impacts. It addresses three audiences: 1) those involved in assessing and regulating timber harvesting activities in Southeast Asia, 2) those involved in trying to achieve conservation goals in the region, and 3) those undertaking research to improve multipurpose forest management. This book shows that forest management can be improved in many simple ways to allow timber extraction and wildlife conservation to be more compatible than under current practices. The recommendations can also be valuable to the many governmental and non-governmental organisations promoting sustainable forest management and eco-labelling. Finally, it identifies a number of shortcomings and gaps in knowledge, which the hope can interest the scientific community and promote further research. This review is, an important scientific step toward understanding and improving sustainable forestry practices for long-term biodiversity conservation. Even in the short term, however, significant improvements can be made to improve both conservation and the efficiency of forest management, and there is no need to delay action due to a perceived lack of information. In the longer term it is expected that the recommendations from this review will be implemented, and that further research will continue to help foster an acceptable balance among the choices needed to maintain healthy wildlife populations and biodiversity in a productive forest estate.

From the website: Although the IUCN has previously established working protocols for plant and animal re-introduction, the great apes present unique challenges and concerns owing to their singular cognitive development. This prompted the Primate Specialist Group to reconsider the existing guidelines in terms of the specific needs of great apes. The resulting synthesis, representing the expert opinion of primatologists and re-introduction practitioners, is presented here as part of the series of best-practices documents. Specifically designed for rehabilitators and specialists in re-introduction, these guidelines start from the fundamental assumption that re-introductions should not endanger wild populations of great apes or the ecosystems they inhabit. Equally important is the health and welfare of the individual great apes being re-introduced, as well as the caretaker staff and the residents of the surrounding areas. The re-introduction guidelines also require that the factors which first threatened great apes in the proposed site of release have been addressed and resolved.
