Biomolecules and Organic Solvents discusses the behavior of enzymes and multi-enzyme complexes in organic solvents, in addition to the problem of water-protein interactions and the characteristics of water at interphases. It attempts to bridge the gap between the all water and the organic solvents systems from the point of view of enzyme structure and function. The mechanism of action of enzymes dispersed in anhydrous organic solvents and the biotechnological perspectives of the field are evaluated, and new information regarding the function and characteristics of complex multi-enzymatic systems and whole cells in organic solvents are examined. New developments regarding the nature of the water pool and interphases of reverse micelles and their enzyme kinetics are also explored. The characteristics and properties of enzymes trapped in reverse micelles are discussed throughout the book. Biomolecules in Organic Solvents is essential reading for biochemists, molecular biologists, and others working in related fields.

The science of biochemistry seeks to answer these three basic questions: What is the nature of the molecules and structures found in living cells? What is the biological function of these molecules and structures? How are they synthesized (and broken down) in the cell? This book deals with the first question, related to the qualitative and quantitative characterization of the biochemical world and to the methods available for structural analysis.

Solvent Extraction In Biotechnology written by Karl Schügerl and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-09 with Science categories.

Solvent Extraction in Biotechnology deals with the reco- very and purification of primary and secondary metabolites by solvent extraction. In the first part the reaction engineering principles: definitions, thermodynamic fundamentals, and system models, the kinetics of mass transfer between two phases without and with chemical reaction as well as extraction equipment, which are important for downstream processing in biotechnology, are considered in detail. The special part of the book describes the recovery of low-molecular metabolites: alcohols, acids and antibiotics with organic solvents, carrier-modifier-solvent systems, supercritical gases as well as with liquid membrane techniques. Several practical examples are given for the recovery of different metabolites as well as for the calculation of the extraction processes necessary for equipment design. Besides solvent extraction, novel separation techniques with liquid membrane, microemulsion and reversed micelles are also presented. This book will introduce the biochemical engineer and process engineer to the recovery of products from complex cultivation broths by modern techniques of solvent extraction and help them with process design.

Redox Chemistry And Interfacial Behavior Of Biological Molecules written by Glenn Dryhurst and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

The papers in this book were presented at the Third International Symposium on Redox Mechanisms and Interfacial Properties of Molecules of Biological Importance held in Honolulu, Hawaii between October 19-23, 1987. This Symposium was held as part of the 172nd Meeting of The Electrochemical Society which was cosponsored by The Electrochemical Society of Japan with the cooperation of The Japan Society of Applied Physics. The aim of the Symposium was to bring together a group of electrochemists and bio-medical scientists with interests in electrochemistry from around the world to present their most current research results and/or to present up-to-date reviews of current areas of research activity. It is quite clear from the diversity of topics covered in the various papers that electrochemistry and electrochemical techniques and principles have much to contribute to our under standing of many important biochemical phenomena. For example, electrochemical studies are providing important insights into the redox properties of biomolecules ranging from relatively small organic molecules such as indoleamine neurotransmitters to very large organic/organometallic molecules which include various redox enzymes or model enzyme systems. Many of the most powerful analytical techniques are now being coupled to electrodes to monitor potential-controlled behaviors of bio logical molecules at charged interfaces. Electrochemical techniques are now being developed which permit extraordinarily small electrodes to be inserted into single cells to monitor electroactive biomolecules. Other microelectrodes are being employed to control cell growth and to manipulate single cells.
