Biophysical Approaches for the Study of Membrane Structure, Part B, Volume 701 explores lipid membrane asymmetry and lateral heterogeneity. A burst of recent research has shown that bilayers whose leaflets differ in their physical properties—such as composition, phase state, or lateral stress—exhibit many fascinating new characteristics, but also pose a host of challenges related to their creation, characterization, simulation, and theoretical description. Chapters in this new release include Characterization of domain formation in complex membranes: Analyzing the bending modulus from simulations of complex membranes, The density-threshold affinity: Calculating lipid binding affinities from unbiased Coarse-Grain Molecular Dynamics simulations, and much more.Additional sections cover Uncertainty quantification for trans-membrane stresses and moments from simulation, Using molecular dynamics simulations to generate small-angle scattering curves and cryo-EM images of proteoliposomes, Binary Bilayer Simulations for Partitioning Within Membranes, Modeling Asymmetric Cell Membranes at All-atom Resolution, Multiscale remodeling of biomembranes and vesicles, Building complex membranes with Martini 3, Predicting lipid sorting in curved bilayer membranes, Simulating asymmetric membranes using P21 periodic boundary conditions, and many other interesting topics. - Explore the state-of-the-art of lipid membrane asymmetry - Covers experimental, theoretical, and computational techniques to create and characterize asymmetric lipid membranes - Teaches how these kinds of approaches create and characterize laterally inhomogeneous membranes

Stressproteinssuchastheheatshockproteins(Hsp)andglucose-regulatedproteins (Grp) are front-line molecules in responses to cellular insult and play key roles in the viability of single cell organisms exposed to environmental stresses. However, the discovery of the roles of Hsp and Grp as molecular chaperones indicates much wider functions in the physiology of cells and organisms. It is now clear that some stress proteins are expressed constitutively and are key mediators of housekeeping protein folding in the day-to-day existence of the cell. The maturation of enzymes, transcriptionfactors, andcellsurfacereceptorsreliesonthesefunctionsofthestress proteins. In addition, the ability of stress proteins to manipulate the structures of target proteins has lent them cell regulatory properties over and above their role in folding the proteome and they play key roles in controlling signal transduction, cell death pathways and transcription. Recently, novel extracellular roles for the Hsp have also emerged as it has become apparent that the Hsp can escape from the cytoplasm of cells and play a signi?cant extracellular role in signaling to neighbor cells and in immunosurveiIlance. As might be expected with such key molecules, dysregulation of Hsp expression over time can lead to disastrous results in terms of the health of the organism. Under-expression of the Hsp is associated with advanced aging and neurodegeneration. Elevated expression is associated with malignant progression. We have aimed in this volume to indicate advances in each oftheseaspectsofstressproteinresearch, withchaptersrangingfrombasicstudies of the role of Hsp in protein folding to reviews examining the breakdown of stress protein regulation in disease. Fluorescent Methods To Study Biological Membranes written by Yves Mely and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-10 with Science categories.
Biological membranes play a central role in cell structure, shape and functions. However, investigating the membrane bilayer has proved to be difficult due to its highly dynamic and anisotropic structure, which generates steep gradients at the nanometer scale. Due to the decisive impact of recently developed fluorescence-based techniques, tremendous advances have been made in the last few years in our understanding of membrane characteristics and functions. In this context, the present book illustrates some of these major advances by collecting review articles written by highly respected experts. The book is organized in three parts, the first of which deals with membrane probes and model membranes. The second part describes the use of advanced quantitative and high-resolution techniques to explore the properties of biological membranes, illustrating the key progress made regarding membrane organization, dynamics and interactions. The third part is focused on the investigation of membrane proteins using the same techniques, and notably on the membrane receptors that play a central role in signaling pathways and therapeutic strategies. All chapters provide comprehensive information on membranes and their exploration for beginners in the field and advanced researchers alike.
