Urban populations are projected to increase from 54% to 66% of the global population by 2050, with close to 90% of the increase concentrated in Asia and Africa. Cities and towns---a growing source of greenhouse gas emissions---will need to address challenges posed by climate change. A nature-based approach in identifying climate change vulnerabilities and developing relevant adaptation options was conducted in three towns of the Greater Mekong Subregion. Working with local governments, nongovernment organizations, women's groups, and professional associations, town-wide adaptation measures were defined by overlaying climate change projections on town plans and zoning schemes for strategic infrastructure. This publication captures valuable experience and lessons from the project.

Wastewater Treatment Through Nature Based Solutions written by Naveen Dwivedi and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-14 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Waste production poses significant environmental challenges globally, stemming from orthodox practices in industrial, agricultural, and medical sectors. These practices generate vast amounts of hazardous waste, polluting water, air, and soil, and threatening human health and ecosystems. Improper disposal exacerbates environmental crises such as pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) emerge as promising alternatives to address these challenges, harnessing nature's restorative power and offering cost-effective, eco-friendly climate solutions. This edited book explores advanced NbS concepts and their role in revolutionizing conventional waste treatment methods while minimizing negative impacts on health and the environment. It delves into NbS characteristics, aims, and applications for sustainable wastewater management, advocating for interdisciplinary research and integrated nature-based systems. Topics covered include dynamic modeling, omics data analysis, computational and bionanotechnological approaches, bio hybrid systems, biomass utilization, life cycle assessment, urban circularity challenges, bio-inspired materials, hydroponics/aquaponics, and ecological sustainability. Adopting these approaches promises to reduce process costs and enhance long-term sustainability. The book offers a comprehensive understanding of nature-based interventions for bioremediation, addressing theoretical and practical aspects alongside contemporary challenges. It is a valuable reference for professionals, scientists, environmentalists, industrialists, researchers, environmental biotechnologists, students, and policymakers engaged in environmental research and strategy development. It provides insights into sustainable progress and future applications of nature-based approaches in mitigating environmental pollution, particularly industrial and municipal wastewater discharge.

Nature Based Solutions For Flood Mitigation written by Carla S. S. Ferreira and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-30 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book provides an overview of the typical nature-based solutions (NBS) used for flood mitigation at different scales and in different areas (e.g. from catchment to hillslope scale; from urban to coastal areas). NBS can provide several ecosystem services, such as water regulation and water quality enhancement, and as such offer relevant technical solutions to complement typical grey infrastructures to mitigate flood hazard and water quality problems. In recent years, political awareness and interest from the scientific community have led to increasing implementation of NBS worldwide. In light of this trend, this book provides valuable insights into the environmental aspects of NBS, particularly their effectiveness for flood and pollution mitigation, and discusses socio-economic aspects related to the implementation of NBS, including regulatory aspects, cost, and citizens’ perceptions of NBS. Compiling the latest research, the book furthers our understanding of the role of NBS for flood mitigation and its relation to environmental aspects, to guide scientists and stakeholders in future NBS projects. It is intended for the scientific community and stakeholders, such as spatial planners and landscape managers. Circular Economy Applications For Water Security written by Erick R. Bandala and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-13 with Technology & Engineering categories.

In arid and semi-arid regions, where water demand exceeds water availability, water security is becoming a significant concern not only related to water availability but also to rigorous and costly requirements to remove conventional and emerging contaminants from effluents discharging into drinking water sources or as water reuse becomes an alternate water supply for communities in these regions. Water and wastewater treatment demands a great amount of energy and resources, highlighting the need for novel applications of the circular economy concept. Circular Economy Applications for Water Security examines knowledge gaps, avenues of future research, and challenges related to the potential of enhanced underutilized/waste materials as a transition to circular economy applications for ensuring the proper quality of water. This book includes fundamental information and practical examples that helps to better understand the concepts included. The circular economy concept is helpful to incept sustainability in the water treatment processes. Every chapter includes the identification of knowledge gaps, avenues for further research, and challenges that guide readers towards real state-of-the-art analysis. Contributors are experts in their areas and will commit to explaining concepts in a user-friendly way without missing scientific rigor.
