The increasing concern for odour abatement, and more generally for reduction of air pollution, has caused a rapid growth in the development of air pollution control techniques, several of which are based on biological degradation of the polluting compounds. This book presents a state-of-the-art overview of recent developments in biological techniques for air pollution control. It describes in detail processes for the prevention of odour nuisances and reduction of odour emissions. It also deals with process design and construction of equipment as well as with odour policy measurements at an international level.

Here is the first book on biotechnological processes for controlling odor and air pollution emanating from industrial and municipal airstreams. Authors from academia and industry describe biotechnological methods ranging from those in laboratory stages to pilot evaluation to full-scale process implementation. In addition to the basic microbiology and engineering, the design, modeling, and control of bioreactors are discussed in detail.

The fifth International Conference on Biotechniques for Air Pollution Control and Bioenergy, held in the city of Nîmes (France) on 11-13 September 2013, aims to overview recent scientific advances and technological discoveries which led to the development of improved operating strategies and novel bioreactors configurations for the removal of volatile pollutants with high efficiencies and reduction of malodorous nuisance. With respect to the energy sector, sustainable gas treatment concepts have rapidly been developed through, for example, the conversion of waste gas emissions into cleaner (bio)fuels which can thus be obtained from cheaper sources than fossil fuels. Additional aspects are considered as well, among which the production or/and recovery of compounds and by-products from the waste gas streams. The fifth International Conference on Biotechniques for Air pollution Control and Bioenergy provides a good opportunity for a diverse community of specialized researchers, PhD students and professionals to share information on recent advances in the use of bioprocesses and bioenergy for solving air pollution problems.

Over the past two decades, the use of microbes to remove pollutants from contaminated air streams has become a widely accepted and efficient alternative to the classical physical and chemical treatment technologies. This book focuses on biotechnological alternatives, looking at both the optimization of bioreactors and the development of cleaner biofuels. It is the first reference work to give a broad overview of bioprocesses for the mitigation of air pollution. Essential reading for researchers and students in environmental engineering, biotechnology, and applied microbiology, and industrial and governmental researchers.

Air pollution is ubiquitous in industrialized societies, causing a host of environmental problems. It is thus essential to monitor and reduce pollution levels. A number of plant species already are being exploited as detectors (for phytomonitoring) and as scavengers (for phytoremediation) of air pollutants. With advances in biotechnology, it is now feasible to modify plants for a wider range of phytomonitoring and phytoremediation applications. Air Pollution and Plant Biotechnology presents recent results in this field, including plant responses during phytomonitoring, pollution-resistant plant species, imaging diagnosis of plant responses, and the use of novel transgenic plants, along with reviews of basic plant physiology and biochemistry where appropriate. Researchers and students working in plant biotechnology and the environmental sciences or considering new areas of investigation will find this volume a valuable reference.

The past 30 years have seen the emergence of a growing desire worldwide that positive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution – air, water, soil, and noise. Since pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste production, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been identi ed: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it available? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers formulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to speci c pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of environmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establishment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.
