Bird Planet presents the best work of Tim Laman, the world’s most celebrated bird photographer Birder extraordinaire Tim Laman is a superstar in one of photography’s most challenging pursuits: The quest to portray birds in the wild. A naturalist and explorer as well as a brilliant image maker, he has spent thousands of hours over more than 30 years wedged precariously in the tops of trees, often in remote jungles, in the hope that careful planning and good fortune will align to produce the perfect picture. His is a passion shared by all birders, carried to the level of art. Bird Planet takes the reader on a journey to the world of birds. Laman shares his best images of spectacular birds on all continents, from the scarlet ibis of the Orinoco River in Venezuela to rhinoceros hornbills in the rainforests of Borneo; his familiar backyard American birds are as memorable as his poetic red-crowned cranes in snowy Japan. His signature achievement—to photograph all the known species of birds of paradise, spending 18 months in New Guinea over eight years—gets a chapter, as does his visits to the penguins of Antarctica. Immensely knowledgeable about both nature and photography, Laman is the perfect guide to the kingdom of the birds.

Death is no longer a mystery. The magic of eternity has been found. I often hear people wondering if life carries on after death. It always makes me smile. That’s exactly what happens. And I used to think no one would discover the truth while they were alive. I was wrong. A sixteen-year-old boy just did. His name is Jonathan Powers and this is his story. Jonathan’s from a planet called Centurian, but that’s not where his story begins. It begins on Earth with the tragic death of a boy from London, Jonathan Prior. Jonathan Prior’s soul travelled from Earth to Centurian and became part of Jonathan Powers. That much is as it should be. Humans join the consciousness of other humans on a distant planet when they die. It’s what happened next that I don’t understand. Jonathan Powers entered the world of the dead, alive. I’m still searching for answers to how he did it and I’m supposed to know about these things. My name is Rose. I’m a little robin. You might have met me outside your house or in a local park. Don’t worry if you haven’t, you’ll meet me inside this book. I’m helping Jonathan find a way home. It’s one thing to go where only the dead have been, quite another to find a way back.

There are more crows now than ever. Their abundance is both an indicator of ecological imbalance and a generous opportunity to connect with the animal world. Crow Planet reminds us that we do not need to head to faraway places to encounter "nature." Rather, even in the suburbs and cities where we live we are surrounded by wild life such as crows, and through observing them we can enhance our appreciation of the world's natural order. Crow Planet richly weaves Haupt's own "crow stories" as well as scientific and scholarly research and the history and mythology of crows, culminating in a book that is sure to make readers see the world around them in a very different way.

From the tufted puffin in the Pacific Northwest to the hook-billed hermit in the Brazilian rainforest, birds worldwide suffer from the effects of climate change. Scientists have found declines of up to 90 percent in some troubled bird populations and unprecedented reproductive failure in others. The most recent studies suggest that 1,227 avian species are threatened with extinction and an additional 838 near-threatened species are urgent priorities for conservation action. This book is an illustrated tour of these endangered birds and their habitats. It features all 1,227 species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, detailing the environmental pressures and conservation prescriptions that hold their futures in the balance. It describes the major bird habitats, including tropical forests; temperate and northern forests; deserts; mountains; grasslands; and Mediterranean, marine, freshwater, and oceanic islands. It givesw an overview of bird species by region -- categorized by family within each region, and a guide to the world's best birding sites.

They had been in space a long time. They had examined every planet within their trajectory as ordered. There had been six planets in their path that they examined as possible sites for colonization and a nebula off in the distance. The nebula was very beautiful, kind of purple and dark blue. But, their orders were not to examine nebulas, but to fi nd a class M planet that could be adaptable to humans. This was defi antly a class M planet all the readings were perfect. But, with all the experts on board no one could fi nd the source of the intelligence it took to make these amazing gardens that circled the planet. Some fairly large birds had been seen. But, there were no land animals with brains large enough to make these gardens. They had to be gardens, gardens with uniformed rows of growing crops. There were uniformed rows of trees as well and lines of shrubs or hedge which divided the garden areas. This planet was placed between three suns just right so as to have one side always warm. The temperature was around 70 to 80 degrees and at night near 50 degrees. The suns were orbiting in a slightly arched line with this small planet. The planet and its two moons orbited around the larger sun. The smaller suns being further away gave little light and a small amount of warmth just enough so the other sides of the planet were not in total darkness at any time. It had water and oxygen, breathable oxygen that meant no suits or helmets. This planet was just what they were looking for. It was a small green pearl in the vast darkness of space.

This short story is in two parts, the first part is a science fiction account of speculation for a space-faring ship that travels to and from distant planets using a unique faster than light (FTL) engine technology. The second part is about the actual attempt at getting the science fiction out of the story and placing it into the real world, today! The theme of the second part is from a prospective of what is called Cosmo-theology. Complete with drawings of the spacecraft and various diagrams that show what needs to be done for FTL travel to be completed for a traveler to the first habitable planet. The unique vision of the story unfolds in the first chapter of the first part where the explanation of the FTL machine using a sub-atomic mirrors and electrostatic bearings is given, which requires a telescope, a computer in 100 story a building, a nuclear fusion or fission reactor on Earth, a rotating magnetic ring in orbit near the moon, and ground based pico-lasers all working together to allow a spaceship to travel FTL.
