Excerpt from The Birds of the British Isles and Their Eggs The reception of the previous series justifies the continuation of a work which provides accurate coloured figures of all but the very rare birds; the ornithological draughtsmanship of Archibald Thorburn, by whom most of the pictures were drawn, speaks for itself. In a book of this size it is not possible to figure a sufficient number of eggs to represent the great range Of variation, but a type of egg of most birds which nest in Britain has been included, drawn to average size; in the present series white or very light self coloured eggs have been omitted, size being stated in the text. To figure all variations of eggs of certain species would fill every plate and still the range would be incomplete the book is not intended solely for the egg collector. Excerpt from British Nesting Birds: A Complete Record of Every Species Which Nests in the British Isles The great interest taken in birds to-day, and the many inquiries which have reached me for a cheap, popular, and handy British Bird book, has resulted in the preparation of this little volume. At best, the short account of each species is limited, but it is hoped that nevertheless many points will be found of interest and service to the student of our wild birds, and it is my fervent wish that many young people especially will be encouraged to observe the feathered population around us as a result of the publication Of this book. I find there are many people interested in birds who rarely have an Opportunity or the necessary knowledge or enthusiasm for studying them. On occasions, however, they do observe birds whose names they would like to know, and of whose life and habits they are desirous of acquiring some information. Primarily it is for these, and young people generally, that this book has been prepared. It will be found quite simple and understandable. Long scientific words have been omitted whenever possible, and when they have of necessity been used, they are included in a Glossary given on page I 5, where their meaning is made clear. Attention may also be directed to the Index of more than one thousand local, old-fashioned, and correct names of birds, for by means of these it should be easy to trace any British nesting Species even if only its local name is known. Excerpt from A Pocket-Book of British Birds As introductory to this little book, I think it is desirable that its object should, in the first place, be explained. It is intended solely for the purposes of reference in the field, and has been very carefully compiled by the combined aid of well-known ornithological works, coupled with practical observations and notes made by myself from time to time in various parts of the British Isles. The book is of a small size, and should be carried in the pocket, where it would always be handy. I am aware that an alphabetical arrangement has much to commend it, but I have refrained from adopting such for the very reason that, in the field, as elsewhere, the mind should be trained to regard birds as creatures belonging to some distinct order and family; accordingly I have adopted a scientific arrangement similar to that set forth in Howard Saunders's admirable 'Manual of British Birds, ' a comprehensive work that all lovers and students of Ornithology, requiring more complete information, should at once consult. Information will be found about all British birds that breed in these islands, and those that are regular visitors at one time of the year or another. Rare species - in some cases irregular stragglers and perhaps unwilling visitors - hardly come within the scope of this book, as the chances of seeing them during a country ramble are very slight. Dismissing at once those species of which only a few specimens have been observed or obtained in this country, there yet remain a goodly number of rare birds, and a short note about them is given, either because in many cases, though irregular in their visits, they may be seen in considerable numbers when they do come, or because, though admittedly rare, they so closely resemble other commoner kinds, that it is quite possible they may have been overlooked. Excerpt from A Handbook of British Birds: Showing the Distribution of the Resident and Migratory Species in the British Islands With an Index to the Records of the Rarer Visitants Following upon the daily exigencies of official work, the preparation of this volume has occupied the leisure hours of many years, and as an attempt to show in one volume the precise status of every so-called British bird, distinguishing the rare and accidental visitors from the residents and annual migrants, it conveys information of a kind which is not to be found in any other work on British birds. Divided into two parts, the first portion deals with British Birds properly so called, being residents, periodical migrants, and annual visitants; the second portion includes the Rare and accidental visitants, and a special feature of the book is that in the case of every rare bird a list of occurrences is given, from the publication of the earliest records (so far as has been ascertained) down to the end of the year 1900. The reader is thereby enabled to estimate at a glance the precise nature of the claim which any given species has to be considered British. Some notion of the labour entailed may be formed when it is stated that 'the number of references in Part I. Amounts to 1500; in Part II. To 2325, and in the whole work to 3825, or there abouts. Excerpt from British Birds, Vol. 3: An Illustrated Magazine Devoted to the Birds on the British List; June, 1909 May, 1910 The ornithological event which has excited the most interest among our readers during the year covered by this volume has been, without doubt, the remarkable irruption of Crossbills. The widespread character of the incursion, the large number of birds taking part in it, and the considerable number of breeding records resulting therefrom are unparalleled in the history of previous irruptions. We take the opportunity of thanking all those correspondents who have helped in making the record of this interesting movement, so far as the British Isles are concerned, as complete as possible. Excerpt from The Nests and Eggs of British Birds: When and Where to Find Them; Being a Handbook to the Oology of the British Islands Tiie following pages deal exclusively with the birds that breed within the confines of the British Archi pelago; consequently the student will find several familiar species omitted, the Fieldfare and the Redwing for example, they having no claim whatever to be con sidered in a work which professes to be a Handbook to the Oology of our islands alone. The idea of a work on the Nests and Eggs of British Birds occurred to me some twelve years ago; and from that time to the present I have been carefully collecting facts, examining specimens, and so on, with the object of forminga comprehensive handbook to British Oology. The results of my studies are now presented to the reader in the following pages. Most of my information has been obtained from personal observation; and with very few exceptions I have taken with my own hands nests and eggs of all our British species; whilst with most of them I have extended my observations over periods of many years.
