When it was officially opened on Easter Monday, 5th April 1847, Birkenhead park became the first municipally funded park in Britain. It was a pioneer in the development of urban public parks, designed for use by everyone, irrespective of social class, ethnicity or age. In terms of town planning, it demonstrated the importance of including green infrastructure in urban development as a vital contribution to public health and wellbeing. Paxton’s design for the park was heralded as ‘a masterpiece of human creative genius’ : it served as a vehicle for the global transmission of the English landscape school and led to the creation of numerous public parks everywhere, most famously Central Park, New York, incorporating of many of Paxton’s design features. This book addresses a long-standing gap in the Park’s historiography. Regarded as ‘one of the greatest wonders of the age’, it is an important contribution to nineteenth-century landscape history with a local focus, but of international significance. But it seeks to interpret the Park’s development until 1914 within a political and cultural context, drawing on economic and social history, as a means of explaining why it was not until the late-nineteenth century that it finally became a focal point for recreation and public health.

Birkenhead is essentially a 19th-century 'new town', its planned grid of streets still stretching westwards from the Georgian elegance of Hamilton Square. Two hundred years ago it did not exist. The settlement, such as it was, consisted of a mere scatter of farmhouses and cottages, which supported a population in 1801 of just 17 families living in 16 houses.Yet this tiny community lying on the east shore of Wirral was not entirely a backwater. The mid-12th century had seen the foundation of a Benedictine priory, while half a century later, in 1207, the granting of letters patent to Liverpool brought ever-increasing activity to the Mersey. The ferry meant there was plenty of coming and going, and local farmers, fisherfolk and ferrymen lived far from mundane lives. The catalyst for change was the introduction of a steam ferry service, and by the end of Victoria's reign the town numbered over 110,000 inhabitants. It gained its first MP in 1861 and became a borough in its own right in 1877. The docks first opened in 1847 and the great shipbuilding firm of Cammell Laird provided a backdrop to the town's spectacular growth.Birkenhead had the country's first publicly funded park, designed by Joseph Paxton, the first street tramway and, with the Mersey Rail Tunnel, the first underwater railway in Europe. Today, although shipbuilding has ceased and activity in the docks has declined, much of the legacy of this magnificent past has survived. This fully illustrated new account sheds light on Birkenhead's fascinating heritage and traces the town's development from its earliest years. Based on a wide range of local and national sources, it provides a readable and accessible narrative, which will be welcomed by all those keen to know Birkenhead better.

The History of Birkenhead & Bidston is a historical introduction in to the industrial town of Birkenhead and the village of Bidston. Birkenhead is Wirral's best known industrial area, famed for centuries for its maritime trade and commercial activity. The name Birkenhead derives from the Old English 'birchen' which translated into' birch trees on a headland'. This of course refers to the area known today as Woodside which in ancient times was a large piece of land filled with Birch trees that jutted out into the river Mersey. Although today many people consider Birkenhead the centre of Wirral's economy, it is only in recent years that this area has become heavily populated and the hub of Wirral industry. Prior to the 1800's there was very little in Birkenhead to talk about other than the old priory, a ferry house and a sparce population. Birkenhead had a meagre population of 110 people in 1801 suggesting that very little trade or activity went on in this area. Within the short period of 50 years and thanks to some very clever town planners, the population had rocketed to over 8000 residents sparking the boom which transformed Birkenhead in to a busy industrial town. Bidston is a suburb of Birkenhead, situated on the Wirral Peninsula. Bidston also holds many treasures such as the hidden tunnels beneath Bidston Hill, the Bidston Observatory and the Tam O'Shanters farm. In modern days it is a mixture of the well-preserved Bidston Village, Bidston Hill, the industrial estate Bidston Moss and a modern housing estate.
