As the day faded into night, the animals were amazed that the little manger remained bathed in a beautiful soft light. There was no lantern in the stable, no hearth for a fire, and outside the stable the night was darkening. But inside, the face of the woman seemed to glow. The man returned, and from the bundles they had carried prepared a small amount of bread and fruit for the woman. The donkey lay down close to his master, staring at the face of the woman. Something about her was very special, he sensed. The Stable is an unusual Christmas story that shares the tale of more than one miracle that occurred on that holy night in Bethlehem. You will be left wondering what really happens in stables, barns, and pastures everywhere each Christmas Eve. This sweet story will bring a smile to every childs face, because they do believe in miracles.

The time is right for a critical reassessment of Cold War culture both because its full cultural impact remains unprocessed and because some of the chief paradigms for understanding that culture confuse rather than clarify. A collection of the work of some of the best cultural critics writing about the period, American Literature and Culture in an Age of Cold War reveals a broad range of ways that American cultural production from the late 1940s to the present might be understood in relation to the Cold War. Critically engaging the reigning paradigms that equate postwar U.S. culture with containment culture, the authors present suggestive revisionist claims. Their essays draw on a literary archive--including the works of John Updike, Joan Didion, Richard E. Kim, Allen Ginsberg, Edwin Denby, Alice Childress, Frank Herbert, and others--strikingly different from the one typically presented in accounts of the period. Likewise, the authors describe phenomena--such as the FBI's surveillance of writers (especially African Americans), biopolitics, development theory, struggles over the centralization and decentralization of government, and the cultural work of Reaganism--that open up new contexts for discussing postwar culture. Extending the timeline and expanding the geographic scope of Cold War culture, this book reveals both the literature and the culture of the time to be more dynamic and complex than has been generally supposed.

Death provides us with some of our very best folklore. Some fear it, some embrace it, and most have pretty firm ideas about what happens when we die. Although some people may not want to talk about dying, it’s the only thing that happens to all of us—and there’s no way to get around it. This publication of the Texas Folklore Society examines the lore of death and whatever happens afterward. The first chapter examines places where people are buried, either permanently or temporarily. Chapter Two features articles about how people die and the rituals associated with funerals and burials. The third chapter explores some of the stranger stories about what happens after we’re gone, and the last chapter offers some philosophical musings about death in general, as well as our connection to those who have gone before.

The small Texas town of Riverby is on the road to recovery from scandals and corruption that led to the murder of their beloved sheriff when the wife of an eccentric professor commits suicide. During a somber graveside service, her deviant son pushes the elderly funeral director into his mother's open grave. When the town's stately funeral home is destroyed by fire and a small girl's party dress is discovered in an abandoned shack, Riverby's survival seems threatened. Then a stranger steps off a train and hobbles across a field to free a man from a trap just in time to save his hand and possibly his life. The Circle of Hurt takes in this obscure and enigmatic stranger with the intention of helping him, but it is The Circle and the town that receives help. The chain of dark events is not broken, but light begins to triumph over darkness. Jim Ainsworth plumbs the depth of Southern and Texas fiction in his quintessential style. Skillfully treading the line between fiction and truth, he writes about characters he has known, places he has been, and paths he has traveled. --Dr. Fred Tarpley, professor emeritus of Literature and Languages. Jim Ainsworth is a master at creating characters and weaving a tapestry from the threads of life which are designed from unexpected events with colors of brilliance as well as darkness. He makes readers realize that man has a God-given need to be understood, loved, and forgiven. --Loretta Kibler, former teacher and school superintendent. Jim Ainsworth crafts characters and settings with down home comfort, sympathetic characters and scenes that keep us turning pages and coming back for more. --Writers Digest Jim Ainsworth's writing gives me a renewed sense of the tether that binds me to God. He shook up my world. --Amazon review by Sofie
