We, of the Bishop Baraga Association, have created this booklet as a souvenir of your visit to the Bishop Baraga Educational Center and Museum (BECM). If you are purchasing it elsewhere, we hope it will inspire you to come and visit us at the Center. Within these pages you will find an abridged biography of Venerable Bishop Baraga's life, a timeline of his journey toward sainthood and pictures of the Center, gardens and artifacts on display in the Museum. The biography is based largely upon Rev. Antoine Ivan Rezek's History of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette, Vol. I and the collection of letters and reports written by Bishop Baraga. Because the material quoted and paraphrased in the Biography come from sources written in the 19th and early 20th Century, the term "Indian" was used. Though some may view it as offensive today, we certainly have no wish to offend anyone. To convey the times with historical accuracy, we left the word as is and pray that it will be understood in the context of the times. We have great respect for the Native American people, the people Bishop Baraga loved. The Venerable Frederic Baraga was a complex man, but centrally, a man of deep faith. His love for the people in the Upper Great Lakes region - both the Native Americans and the European immigrants - sprang from his love for God and his deep desire to share his faith in Jesus Christ with others. Our desire, with the Bishop Baraga Educational Center, and with this book, is to con¬tinue Bishop Baraga's mission. The history of the Baraga House is an ongoing process that hopefully can be updated in the future. We also fervently pray that we'll be updating the timeline of the cause for sainthood very soon!If one wishes to delve deeper into the life of Venerable Bishop Baraga, most of the books listed in the bibliography can be found in the gift shop of the Bishop Baraga Educational Center and Museum.

A ground-breaking work of nation building, this unique biographical book by many of English and French Canada's best-known writers and thinkers -- Margaret Atwood, Lucien Bouchard, Dr. Samantha Nutt, Ken Dryden, etc. -- tells the story of the extraordinary legacy of the French contribution to our very way of life. In 1913, schoolgirls found a heavy metal plaque peeking out of the soil in St-Pierre, South Dakota. On it they saw engraved characters and signs they could not decipher. They took the plaque back home, and somehow, it found its way into the hands of a local historian who immediately realized the importance of the artifact. One hundred and seventy years earlier, French-Canadian explorer Pierre Gaultier de la Vérendrye had written about his travels to the west in search of the elusive "Western Sea." In his journal, he remembered: "I placed upon a hillock near the fort a lead plaque with the arms and inscription of the King." That was the plaque found by the children, the proof that de la Vérendrye was the first white man to set eyes on the Rockies, 60 years before Lewis and Clark's famous expedition. Traces of the French-Canadians' contribution to North American history can be found in all regions of the continent. More often than not, we are unaware of or indifferent towards these signs. Yet the descendants of the French travelled farther than one would expect, exploring the land and a wide variety of fields of human activity (science, arts, economy, etc.). Through their audacity, their courage and their determination, they shaped Canada -- and, to a smaller but still significant extent -- the United States. In a unique partnership with Les Éditions La Presse, Legacy is the story of a dozen French-Canadian pioneers, from the era of Nouvelle-France up to the 20th century. This ambitious book project will take the form of a series of biographical essays written by Canadian personalities and leading authors. Through the lives of these extraordinary persons, the authors will reflect on the French-Canadian legacy. They are all convinced that Canada would not be what it is today were it not for these French-speaking Canadians who explored the land, hung on to their culture while respecting that of others, longed for peace, fought with courage, and stood up for a brand of humanism that helped shape the country we live in today.

An introductory biography of Baraga, lengthy passages from his letters, vignettes about persons in the text and a comprehensive bibliography yield an in-depth portrait of mid-nineteenth century life, especially in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It was 1831 when Father Frederic Baraga arrived in this country from his native Slovenia. He had come to bring Christianity to the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of the Old Northwest. Twenty years later, when Baraga first heard that he might be named Bishop of Upper Michigan, he began to keep a "daybook" or diary. Intended as a private document for his own use and reference, the diary contains a log of Baraga's missionary journeys, his observations about daily weather conditions, ship movement on the lakes, and a running account of the various works he accomplished. Between the lines of the usually concise entries, however, there are clues to Baraga's zeal, dedication, and generosity. An introductory biography of Baraga, lengthy passages from his letters, vignettes about persons in the text and a comprehensive bibliography yield an in-depth portrait of mid-nineteenth century life, especially in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
