It is the story of leaving my family, my perspective of the Vietnamese culture, the politics, and combat seen as a young physician. I earned my "street cred" as an army doc during the Vietnam War. As with the other physicians called into service, I was the unlikely soldier. My book is poignant and often humorous. We needed the humor to survive. I would never have volunteered for such a traumatic experience, yet I can't say, "I wish I'd never gone to Vietnam." I believe this experience had a major positive effect on molding me into who I am today. In the words of a Special Forces soldier, he described this sentiments accurately; "I wouldn't go back to Vietnam for a million dollars. On the other hand, I wouldn't have given up the experience for a million dollars."

This publication represents the ninth volume in an operational and chronological series covering the Marine Corps’ participation in the Vietnam War. This particular volume details the final chapter in the Corps’ involvement in South-East Asia, including chapters on Cambodia, the refugees, and the recovery of the container ship SS Mayaguez. Although largely written from the perspective of the III Marine Amphibious Force, this volume also describes the roles of the two joint commands operating in the region: the Defense Attaché Office, Saigon, and the United States Support Activities Group, Thailand. Thus, while the volume emphasizes the Marine Corps’ role in the events of the period, significant attention also is given to the overall contribution of these commands in executing U.S. policy in South-east Asia from 1973 to 1975. Merriam Press Modern History 1. First Edition (March 2013). The Bach Mai Hospital was founded in 1911 and has become the largest, comprehensive general hospital in Vietnam. Currently, Bach Mai Hospital serves as a major teaching hospital for the Hanoi Medical University, assisting in the daily training of hundreds of medical students and interns as well as post graduate students and medical specialists. The Bach Mai Nursing School trains over 100 students annually with specialized programs for head nurses and nursing specialties. Hundreds of research projects are ongoing at the Bach Mai Hospital and result in significant contributions to the medical literature. Each year, the Hospital receives hundreds of foreign delegations who go there for training, for sharing medical knowledge, or to co-operate in the development of research projects. Dr. Bartecchi served in the U.S. Army as a Flight Surgeon during the Vietnam War and in addition to caring for wounded troops, he organized medical forays by helicopter to towns throughout the Mekong Delta. During his tour in Vietnam, working so closely with the civilian population, he developed an admiration and respect for the resilient and proud Vietnamese people. In the mid-1990s, Bartecchi became involved with assisting the Bach Mai Hospital improve their facility and providing training for the doctors, nurses and staff there, including exchanges of medical personnel between Bach Mai Hospital and American hospitals, as well as arranging for assistance in the area of medical equipment and supplies, donated by organizations and corporations. This book provides the background to this story. Humanitarian aid programs are a partnership – a knowledgeable, capable donor and an organized, enlightened receiver. Programs maximizing those qualities have a good chance of succeeding, while others will waste the time, talent and treasures of the donor, and further frustrate the hopes and ambitions of the receivers. In this text, Dr. Bartecchi outlines a program that worked and provides suggestions that could help others develop a successful program. Carl E. Bartecchi, M.D., MACP is a Distinguished Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
