The author turns true experiences into stories that adorn his biographies and autobiographies. He does so as a means of information, instruction and discussion. In fact he provides authentic insights of the human predicament in a universe that is sometimes friendly, sometimes hostile but often indifferent. He also delineates the human aspect in realistic living characters. The narration of many incidents and accidents is woven into his stories reinforced by imaginative fiction. True tragic incidents are both intensely dramatic and highly emotional. They engender sympathy and empathy that imprints them as true to life. On the other hand, comic episodes in the life of the characters stimulate humour, an element of pleasant relief and entertainment. True or imaginary they embellish the literary world by allowing the readers' participation in adventures of ordinary people. Personal experiences encompass man's journey on earth, no matter how colourless and humdrum is his life. However man's physical activities, such as travels to nearby or to distant countries, enrich life experiences. In addition, man's thought, stimulated by philosophical dicta, makes him aware of the hidden truths of his universal role. As a human being, Man is subject to superior forces. He is buffeted by coincidences, destiny, misfortune and even Providence. Though this collection of stories may encapsulate a short span of a man's life, they are in essence true to life. Though plot may be coloured by imaginative fiction, the stories are characteristic of a true narration and a recording of what truly happened. Thus, the reader should evaluate the story by its truth rather than by other characteristic structures. Nevertheless, the author considers these stories more as a literature of escape than of interpretation. Yet they broaden the readers' vision and sharpen their awareness of the everyday reality of life. The stories are certainly true to life. They illustrate various reactions and other aspects of human behaviour,

This new, thoroughly updated fourth edition of Bradt's Malta - written by an expert who has been visiting for more than a decade - remains the most comprehensive guide available and has built a reputation for being the essential guide for getting beneath the surface of this island nation and discovering what lies beyond the beaches. Sun, sand and sea there may be, but Malta boasts so much more, and this new edition is packed with historical and archaeological insights, from the Stone Age to the Romans, the Knights Hospitaller to World War II. It also showcases the islands' wildlife and bird-watching opportunities, summer festas, and the less commercialised islands of Gozo and Comino. Malta has been changing at the rate of knots, with Valletta's year as European Capital of Culture accelerating restoration and renovation. Copious openings - of historic sights, key fortresses, a new national gallery and boutique accommodation, particularly in Valletta - are covered, while the culinary scene continues to thrive, with notably greater choice for vegetarians and vegans. Malta has recently become much more socially accepting and is now considered one of the top places for LGBT travellers, while the offering for younger travellers has expanded, too. The Isle of MTV festival is going strong, Annie Mac now has a spring festival in Malta and a host of bars and clubs has sprung up. There is also lots on offer culturally, with festivals, concerts, exhibitions, theatre and opera all contributing to a full programme. Bradt's Malta contains all the information needed for a successful trip. Whatever your budget, it is the ideal guide for everyone from culture aficionados to history and archaeology buffs, foodies, war veterans, families and couples escaping for a romantic break.

Until Proven Safe written by Nicola Twilley and has been published by MCD this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-20 with Social Science categories.

Geoff Manaugh and Nicola Twilley have been researching quarantine since long before the COVID-19 pandemic. With Until Proven Safe, they bring us a book as compelling as it is definitive, not only urgent reading for social-distanced times but also an up-to-the-minute investigation of the interplay of forces–––biological, political, technological––that shape our modern world. Quarantine is our most powerful response to uncertainty: it means waiting to see if something hidden inside us will be revealed. It is also one of our most dangerous, operating through an assumption of guilt. In quarantine, we are considered infectious until proven safe. Until Proven Safe tracks the history and future of quarantine around the globe, chasing the story of emergency isolation through time and space—from the crumbling lazarettos of the Mediterranean, built to contain the Black Death, to an experimental Ebola unit in London, and from the hallways of the CDC to closed-door simulations where pharmaceutical execs and epidemiologists prepare for the outbreak of a novel coronavirus. But the story of quarantine ranges far beyond the history of medical isolation. In Until Proven Safe, the authors tour a nuclear-waste isolation facility beneath the New Mexican desert, see plants stricken with a disease that threatens the world’s wheat supply, and meet NASA’s Planetary Protection Officer, tasked with saving Earth from extraterrestrial infections. They also introduce us to the corporate tech giants hoping to revolutionize quarantine through surveillance and algorithmic prediction. We live in a disorienting historical moment that can feel both unprecedented and inevitable; Until Proven Safe helps us make sense of our new reality through a thrillingly reported, thought-provoking exploration of the meaning of freedom, governance, and mutual responsibility.

Malta Remembered written by Margaret Dexter and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-13 with Family & Relationships categories.

In 1963, Margaret Dexters husband made an impulsive decision to pack up and move to England for a year. They leased their home in Santa Barbara, California, and together with their four children made an unforgettable journey by land and sea, throwing caution to the wind. The move to England exposed the Dexters to much of the cultural richness of Europe; unfortunately, they returned to face financial ruin and cliff-hanging events. In 1967, Stillman Dexters work led him to Libya, forcing him to leave the family. In 1969, Margaret, five children and two poodles moved to the island of Malta, not far from Libya and closer to Stillman. Their life became almost idyllic, promising a rosy future. By November 1970, Libyas tense political situation changed everything. Libyas leader, Muammar Qaddaffi, denied renewal of all American work permits. The family plans for what might have been were swept away by one telegram. Margaret Dexter pens a loving tribute not only to the island of Malta and its special inhabitants, but also to her familys remarkable peregrination. Malta Remembered is an inspiring story of how one couple blessed and united by good fortune braved waves of adversity with hard work and love.

Weird Dinosaurs written by John Pickrell and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-28 with Nature categories.

“A tour de force…highlights the odd reptiles that roamed all corners of the earth millions of years ago.”—Sydney Morning Herald From the outback of Australia to the Gobi Desert of Mongolia and the savanna of Madagascar, the award-winning science writer and dinosaur enthusiast John Pickrell embarks on a world tour of new finds, meeting the fossil hunters who work at the frontier of discovery. He reveals the dwarf dinosaurs unearthed by an eccentric Transylvanian baron; an aquatic, crocodile-snouted carnivore bigger than T. rex that once lurked in North African waterways; a Chinese dinosaur with wings like a bat; and a Patagonian sauropod so enormous it weighed more than two commercial jet airliners. Other surprising discoveries hail from Alaska, Siberia, Canada, Burma, and South Africa. Why did dinosaurs grow so huge? How did they spread across the world? Did they all have feathers? What do sauropods have in common with 1950s vacuum cleaners? The stuff of adventure movies and scientific revolutions, Weird Dinosaurs examines the latest breakthroughs and new technologies that are radically transforming our understanding of the distant past. “This history of the discovery of some of the most outlandish creatures that ever lived, and the excitement of paleontological research, will be sure to both entertain and instruct.”—Spencer Lucas, author of Dinosaurs: The Textbook, Sixth Edition “Fascinating.... Readers learn of beautiful opalised dinosaur bones from Australia and a crested dinosaur found approximately 13,000 feet up Antarctica's Mt. Kirkpatrick, demonstrating that dinosaurs were widely distributed across the globe.”—Publishers Weekly
