Florida Book Awards, Silver Medal for General Nonfiction In the tumultuous year after Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, 29-year-old Pete O’Neal became inspired by reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X and founded the Kansas City branch of the Black Panther Party (BPP). The same year, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover declared the BPP was the “greatest threat to the internal security of the country.” Black Panther in Exile is the gripping story of O’Neal, one of the influential members of the movement, who now lives in Africa—unable to return to the United States but refusing to renounce his past. Arrested in 1969 and convicted for transporting a shotgun across state lines, O’Neal was free on bail pending his appeal when Fred Hampton, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the BPP, was assassinated by the police. O’Neal and his wife fled the United States for Algiers. Eventually they settled in Tanzania, where the O’Neals continue the social justice work of the Panthers through community and agricultural programs and host study-abroad programs for American students. Paul Magnarella—a veteran of the United Nations Criminal Tribunals and O’Neal’s attorney during his appeals process from 1997 to 2001—describes his unsuccessful attempts to overturn what he argues was a wrongful conviction. He lucidly reviews the evidence of judicial errors, the prosecution’s use of a paid informant as a witness, perjury by both the prosecution’s key witness and a federal agent, as well as other constitutional violations. He demonstrates how O’Neal was denied justice during the height of the COINTELPRO assault on black activists in the United States.

This work uncovers the global history of the Black Panther Party, a key post-civil-rights organization, and shows how an international approach broadens and changes our understanding of African American history.Given the increasing public interest in the Black Panthers, this study seeks to go beyond the myths and public persona of the organization. It examines the party's connections and activites in a variety of places, including Cuba, Algeria, and Europe, and demands that we look beyond national boundaries when discussing African American protest movements of the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, it provides an in-depth look at Panther activities in a seemingly unlikely place, Halifax, Nova Scotia, where the Panthers served as the catalyst for significant changes in race relations. This study also provides extensive background on the post-civil-rights era, including the effects of a shift to a post-industrial economy, the disillusionment of many African Americans with the traditional civil rights organizations, and the effects of large-scale national demographic changes.

"The Black Panther documents for all humanity to see, how the wretched slaves of Amerikkka moved fearlessly to establish All Power To The People. [... ] The weekly issues of The Black Panther also shows how people who will be free refuse to be either cowed or intimidated by death, imprisonment or exile, and continue to develop and expand. It is a lesson in the objective truth, that the spirit of the people is indeed greater than the man's technology."

The first book to comprehensively examine how the Black Panther Party has directly shaped the practices and ideas that have animated grassroots activism in the decades since its decline, Black Power Afterlives represents a major scholarly achievement as well as an important resource for today's activists. Through its focus on the enduring impact of the Black Panther Party, this volume expands the historiography of Black Power studies beyond the 1960s-70s and serves as a bridge between studies of the BPP during its organizational existence and studies of present-day Black activism, allowing today's readers and organizers to situate themselves in a long lineage of liberation movements.
