A thought-provoking and fearless exploration of how we can dismantle racism in the classroom and do better by all our students. An Amazon Best Non-Fiction Book of 2022 ‘Essential reading‘ – The Guardian ‘Sharp and witty with moments of startling candour‘ – The i ‘Revealing and beautifully written‘ – David Harewood _____ Before Jeffrey Boakye was a black teacher, he was a black student. Which means he has spent a lifetime navigating places of learning that are white by default. Since training to teach, he has often been the only black teacher at school. At times seen as a role model, at others a source of curiosity, Boakye’s is a journey of exploration – from the outside looking in. In the groundbreaking I Heard What You Said, he recounts how it feels to be on the margins of the British education system. As a black, male teacher – an English teacher who has had to teach problematic texts – his very existence is a provocation to the status quo, giving him a unique perspective on the UK’s classrooms. Told through a series of eye-opening encounters based on the often challenging and sometimes outrageous things people have said to him or about him – from ‘Can you rap?‘ and ‘Have you been in prison?‘ to ‘Stephen who?‘ – Boakye reflects with passion and wit on what he has found out about the presumptions, silences and distortions that underpin the experience of black students and teachers. _____ ‘Hugely important‘ – Baroness Lawrence ‘Deeply compelling, intellectually rigorous and essential‘ – Nels Abbey ‘Makes a powerful case‘ – Rt Hon Lady Hale

Since Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka in 1954, continued resistance to desegregation has resulted in additional racialized policies, ideologies, and practices related to deficit thinking. Efforts to resist desegregation coincided with efforts to destroy Black Career Educators through systemic racism, marginalization, and indicators that they were unsuitable, unlicensed, inexperienced, and barely qualified to instruct Black children. In the year 2020, the largest generation of Black Career Educators will retire and exit public schools thus removing the only advocates for the majority population, Black and Hispanic students. The complex and dominant resistance to Brown, the failure of desegregation and equality in public education for students of color, and the need to retain white supremacy is evident today as students of color disproportionately experience higher rates of expulsion, suspension, and disciplinary actions resulting from racialized policies that dismantle career opportunities related to the future of work and support the school-to-prison pipelines. After thirty-six years as a Black Career Educator, in both secondary and collegiate education environments, I share in living color the results from racialized education policies directed toward Black Career Educators and students of color. In addition, I address the social-psychological impact on both teachers and students of color - especially issues related to teacher victimization, mental health, and racial microaggressions.

Headteachers, teacher unions and education authorities all acknowledge the need for more teachers from black and ethnic minority communities, yet until now very little has been known about the professional experiences of black teachers or of the factors which discourage and exclude black and ethnic minority people from teaching as a career. This book draws on the life histories of headteachers, advisors, teachers and student teachers from black and ethnic communities to find out what their working lives are really like. Detailed case studies and quotations bring their stories alive. It examines how those in positions of influence are seeking to transform schools and improve their pupils' life chances. How do they achieve success and challenge racism? While celebrating black and ethnic minority achievement in education this book does not overlook the costs of success for individuals. Drawing on teachers' own accounts of their work it explores the complexities of their lived experiences and the tensions which can develop between teachers' professional identities and their political identities as black people. The findings and recommendations of this book will be of great interest to educational policy makers and decision makers, to academics working in the field of race relations, and to all engaged in the training and professional development of teachers, both in universities and schools. It includes practical suggestions for promoting racial justice within the context of current policy frameworks. It will also prove useful to trainers and educators in other professional fields, such as social work and public administration.
