Each day that is blessed to us, some black woman, have also been killed or mistreated by police or by another black person. Black women around the world have always organized against injustices, and as time becomes more violent and unequal, black women continue to be the first to stand up for righteousness. It is shameful after generations and comprehensive progress in civil and human rights, that black women lives are still not valued or respected. Today, we have the #METOO movement, however, black women have been violated and disrespected for years, and when white women stand up, that is when women, in general, receive attention for their violations. This is a respective reminder, that black women lives matter, so take notice, as black women show other women how to rise up from mistreatment. Wounds Of The Spirit written by Traci C. West and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-03 with Family & Relationships categories.

A collection of first-person accounts documenting a historical legacy of violence against black women in the U.S. In Wounds of the Spirit, Traci West employs first person accounts-from slave narratives to contemporary interviews to Tina Turner's autobiography-to document a historical legacy of violence against black women in the United States. West, a black feminist Christian ethicist, situates spiritual matters within a discussion of the psycho-social impact of intimate assault against African American women. Distinctive for its treatment of the role of the church in response to violence against African American women, the book identifies specific social mechanisms which contribute to the reproduction of intimate violence. West insists that cultural beliefs as well as institutional practices must be altered if we are to combat the reproduction of violence, and suggests methods of resistance which can be utilized by victim-survivors, those in the helping professions, and the church. Interrogating the dynamics of black women's experiences of emotional and spiritual trauma through the diverse disciplines of psychology, sociology, and theology, this important work will be of interest and practical use to those in women's studies, African American studies, Christian ethics, feminist and womanist theology, women's health, family counseling, and pastoral care.

The Purpose Of Power written by Alicia Garza and has been published by One World this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-20 with Social Science categories.

An essential guide to building transformative movements to address the challenges of our time, from one of the country’s leading organizers and a co-creator of Black Lives Matter “Excellent and provocative . . . a gateway [to] urgent debates.”—Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, The New Yorker NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY Time • Marie Claire • Kirkus Reviews In 2013, Alicia Garza wrote what she called “a love letter to Black people” on Facebook, in the aftermath of the acquittal of the man who murdered seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin. Garza wrote: Black people. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter. With the speed and networking capacities of social media, #BlackLivesMatter became the hashtag heard ’round the world. But Garza knew even then that hashtags don’t start movements—people do. Long before #BlackLivesMatter became a rallying cry for this generation, Garza had spent the better part of two decades learning and unlearning some hard lessons about organizing. The lessons she offers are different from the “rules for radicals” that animated earlier generations of activists, and diverge from the charismatic, patriarchal model of the American civil rights movement. She reflects instead on how making room amongst the woke for those who are still awakening can inspire and activate more people to fight for the world we all deserve. This is the story of one woman’s lessons through years of bringing people together to create change. Most of all, it is a new paradigm for change for a new generation of changemakers, from the mind and heart behind one of the most important movements of our time.

A recent television series special entitled, "Surviving R Kelly" sparked a wave of unrest and social media discussion-- especially in Black communities. The alleged atrocities suffered at the hands of this famous Black entertainer were more than plausible, and viewers were outraged by both the nature and depth of the abuse that they saw, as well as by the length of time these alleged abuses had been allowed to continue unchallenged and unpunished even by U.S. courts. The writers of this curriculum have come together to represent a segment of the Black community. We have come together to offer what we can-as our gift-to aide in the protection, education and empowering of Black females. We are academic administrators. We are teachers and professors. We are attorneys, clergy and heads of social justice and Black women's organizations. We are psychologists, church workers, and women involved in many forms of social service. And it is our determination to offer up the knowledge that we have struggled to attain as one action that can serve to address the needs of Black females. We are united in our love and concern for the welfare of our sisters. We are the voices of Black women from the multi-denominational Black Church...and we are listening, hearing, angry and determined.
