It started with a letter from Queensland and abruptly Duncan Ross, a placid clerk, is plucked from his humdrum life on the Sydney wharves and dispatched on a secret mission to the South Seas where he encounters brutal blackbirders, fierce cannibals and, unexpectedly, a resurgent Ku Klux Klan fixed on recreating the cotton plantations of the Old South in the far reaches of the Pacific. From the crystalline lagoons of the Coral Sea to the pearling grounds of the Torres Strait Duncan charts an erratic course betwixt duty and self-preservation. Kidnapped, castaway and desperate he finally pitches up on the raw coast of unknown New Guinea where he is plunged headlong into the midst of unspeakable savagery and danger. This is a rollicking saga of adventure and intrigue set against the colonial rivalry of the great powers in the South Pacific.

"How can you sing on this miserable morning?" said the Blackbird, gloomily, and indeed half contemptuously. "Miserable morning!" replied the Robin in a tone of surprise; "why I don't think it's at all a miserable morning, --just look at the beautiful snow." "Oh, that's what you call that white stuff down there, is it?" said the Blackbird, disdainfully gazing at the white world beneath him. "Yes, to be sure," said the Robin; "have you never seen snow before?" "No," replied the Blackbird, "I've not, and I shan't break my heart if I never see it again. All last night it was dropping on my back till I was wet through and through; and just now, when I flew down to look about for my breakfast, why it all gave way under my feet, and I might have been smothered." "Ah," said the Robin, shaking his head, "you won't mind it when you get more used to it. You see you're a young bird; this is only your first winter. Now I saw it all last winter. I'm nearly two years old." The Robin said this with a certain pride of seniority, and stretched himself to his full height as he looked at his younger, but much more bulky, neighbour. "I don't see any great advantage in being old," said the Blackbird, sarcastically; "but since you are so experienced, perhaps you can tell me what it all means?"

Sr 71 written by Richard H. Graham and has been published by Quarto Publishing Group USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-09 with History categories.

A pictorial history of the legendary Lockheed spy plane, written by one of its pilots and “filled to the brim with information and revelation” (Seattle Post Intelligencer Travel for Aircraft blog). At the height of the Cold War in 1964, President Johnson announced a new aircraft dedicated to strategic reconnaissance. The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird spy plane flew more than three-and-a-half times the speed of sound, so fast that no other aircraft could catch it. Above 80,000 feet, its pilots had to wear full-pressure flight suits similar to what was used aboard the space shuttle. Developed by the renowned Lockheed Skunk Works, the SR-71 was an awesome aircraft in every respect, and it took the world by storm. The SR-71 was in service with the US Air Force from 1964 to 1998, when it was withdrawn from use, superseded by satellite technology. Twelve of the thirty-two aircraft were destroyed in accidents, but none were ever lost to enemy action. Throughout its thirty-four-year career, the SR-71 was the world’s fastest and highest-flying operational manned aircraft. It set world records for altitude and speed: an absolute altitude record of 85,069 feet on July 28, 1974, and an absolute speed record of 2,193.2 miles per hour on the same day. On September 1, 1974, it set a speed and time record over a recognized course between New York and London (3,508 miles) of 1,435.587 miles per hour and an elapsed time of 1 hour, 54 minutes, 56.4 seconds. SR-71 covers every aspect of the plane’s development, manufacture, modification, and active service from the insider’s perspective of one its pilots—and is lavishly illustrated with more than 200 photos.
